Dry, Brittle Nails :(

For as long as I remember, I've had brittle nails with vertical ridges on them. I've just read online that cuticle oils can help remedy this.

Does anybody have any cuticle oil recommendations? Also, any suggestions on what else I can do/take (vitamins? supplements?) or what other nail products I can buy that can help?

Thanks, lovelies!

You should try the JESSICA PHENOMEN OIL INTENSIVE MOISTURISER It work wonder and has a nice smell to it .
•Massage into your cuticles morning and night .
•Massage from right to left in a rotating motion.
•Do not massage up and down.
•This oil can be used on any dry, rough skin, such as your elbows, feet and knees or add 10-12 drops in your bath for extra softening.

Hope this helps ! x

thanks, alice! i'll keep an eye out for it :)

Try OPI Nail Envy! For years I've had the worst dry, brittle, cracked nails and its the only treatment thats worked for me! Just apply it like a clear polish before you paint your nails and then as a topcoat!

trick from a professional almost all nail/ cuticle oils are the same. Cheap trick just use olive oil on your nails. Ridging is usually hereditary and pasted down, and from aging. If you are still young then it can be from damage to the nail matrix ( the skin above your nail moon). But yes nail/ cuticle oil will help and stimulation to the nail and a good nail hardener. Shellac CND's new product is also a good way to help strengthen, have polish with mirror, chip free polish for two weeks to help your nails grow out and look nice.

The problem that you are facing with your nails is your own health. Nails are made up of keratin, a protein substance that your body makes.

If your nails are brittle and have vertical rigids I'm going to take a guess that, like me, you need to add a multi-vitamin. I have the same problem with my nails when I don't take a multi-vitamin but the problem clears up within a few months of taking the multi-vitamins. The nail that's on the bed will never be fixed with a multi-vitamin, what's done is done, but the new nail growth can be strengthened from within with either a good diet or by adding multi-vitamins.

My suggestion is this.

For NOW you can do the following things to make your nails look better and act stronger.

1. Smooth away the ridges using a nail buffer. I usually buy a four-way to an eight-way depending on what's available but you need to be VERY careful since you can buff away too much of the onyx (the nail) and can make it more susceptible to breakage once it reaches the hyponychium (the tip of your nail).

2. If you don't want to use a buffer you can always buy a ridge filler. You can find these as low as $3 up to $10 a bottle depending on the brand.

3. Use a nail strengthener. There are so many types on the market but I would recommend using one fiberglass threads.

As for stimulating the growth of the nail, that's a myth no amount of oils applied to matrix will get the root to create keratin faster. Nails typically grow 1/8" per month with the nails growing the fastest during the summer months and slowest during the winter.

You can, as I mentioned, help your nails in the long run by having a proper diet that's full of healthy choices or supplement your current diet with a multi-vitamin but I really do recommend talking to a doctor FIRST before taking a multi-vitamin. If you already take a multi-vitamin check the dosage and consider taking a different one. I take Nature Made Liquid Softgel, Multi For Her vitamins (aka horsepills).

The best thing to do for your nails... never use the nails to open pop cans or anything with a lid and make sure you keep your hands moisturized in the winter. :D
