Hi,
I'm an aspiring MUA. I haven't had an official training yet but every time I practice on someone I consider it a learning experience. One thing I can't seem to figure out is how to instruct my models so that I can easily tight-line their upper waterline. They always end up tearing up or blinking too much. Is there any way to work around this so they can feel comfortable while I am lining so uncomfortably close to their eyeballs? Please help!

There really isn't a really good trick to do so because even the MUAs who apply eyeliner to the upper lid's waterline will get tearing.
I guess the best thing to do is to instruct them to look as far up as possible and hold their lid taut as you apply. Apply the liner to only a fraction of the lid if they begin to tear up. Let the eye rest for a moment and work on the other eye then go back to finish the lid.
If you're uncomfortable lining their upper lid then don't do it. Very few looks require the upper lid having eyeliner on their waterline.

If you use a highly transferable liner, like MAC Kohl in Smolder, you can line their bottom water line, then ask them to tightly shut their eyes. The black will transfer to their upper waterline.
Truth be told, it's just a really hard thing to do on someone else, and often times with stress out their eyes. This means either watery eyes or red eyes, neither of which you want!

Thanks for the advice ladies! I will try both of them out. I didn't realize this was a common problem for MUAs, I thought I was just doing something wrong. Yes when their eyes start to tear like that I just stop because I feel like I'm torturing them. I think if their eyes are just that sensitive then it's just a better choice not to bother. It usually only bothers me when I don't tightline on light-haired models. You can see the pink between their lashes in the photos. But thank you ladies again!

Oh it's definitely NOT you. The upper waterline is very difficult to do on one's self much less on someone else. Your best bet would be simply to build the mascara at the base of the eyelashes, so it gives the illusion of the waterline being lined, instead of trying to line the waterline.

To stop the tearing you can hold your breath for a couple sec. It works
