To check if your lipstick contains lead, rub some lipstick onto your hand and rub gold jewellery onto the lipstick. If the lipstick changes it's colour to black then it contains lead.

I haven't heard of Mac lipsticks containing lead.

I havn't heard anything about clinique on the FDA list. I read Avon also has the higest lead count in their lipstick. FDA states its a safe amount but I'm still going to stray from those particular lipstick brands.

Every single list I've seen Clinique is in the top 3. And yes Avon does have some lipstick that contains lead.

Now girls, don't think you have to avoid these lipsticks to prevent yourself from developing cancer! ^ ^
Some candies (if not most) contain more lead than these lipsticks! Think of it like this: Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide, which is lethal to humans, but you would need to consume a lot of apples to even be exposed to that toxicity. In such small doses, your body can easily detoxify any harm brought to you by the consumption. You would have to eat a lot of lipstick to even develop cancer (along with other medical disasters brought by the strange habit). Your consumption of lipstick is so LIMITED that FDA does not see it as a potential threat to the body. =^ ^= Dior is my favorite lip brand and I would loathe myself if I had to toss all that makeup out the window (Not to mention money, heehee!)

I totally agree with you Cecille. It's not as if we're eating lipstick haha. Doing a lot of research these brands are found to contain an above normal lead amount which can be considered dangerous. In many of the brands it's only a certain few colours of lipstick that were found to be dangerous or had to be recalled. I just wanted to make people a bit more aware and be a bit more careful about what they're putting on their lips. (:

The average woman will eat 2lbs of lipstick in her life time..just thought I'd through that out there!

The Beauty Brains (great website, for those who don't know it) actually covered this topic recently - according to their calculations, a woman would have to eat 15 tubes of lipstick every day to raise the level of lead in your blood high enough to be dangerous. I won't go through all their calculations, but I'll leave the link here for you all to check it out! http://thebeautybrains.com/2013/04/03/does-lipstick-expose-you-to-dangerous-levels-of-lead/ Obviously it's always great to be aware of what you're putting on or in your body, but in this case, it doesn't seem to be something to really be worried too much about.

Ok. but its always good to be aware of the contents in the things you are putting on your face and lips. will it cause cancer is an different issue!! consuming lead in small amounts may also be hazardous if not cancer.
thanks Shauna for this informative post!
