Hi Rachael,
Try coffee or black tea (at room temperature of course) and use a large kabuki brush to buff it evenly all over your skin so it doesn't streak.

I've heard of adding cocoa to your lotion, it would probably work with coffee too;) if not, you can find lotion than tan gradually or even sprays(it won't wash off)

This isn't exactly homemade, but Jergens make a lotion that tabs you gradually but protects your skin from the sun so you don't burn. If you can't find anything else, that stuff is worth a try!
