I think sometimes when it looks cakey you've either put too much foundation or powder or both. I like full coverage foundation but medium coverage is great with a very lil amount of matte powder.

A great medium coverage bb cream is Tarte's.
Less is more, use one layer of medium-full coverage rather than layers and layers of a thin watery one. Use less powder, get a good one that is applied once and can last the day. Try spot concealing, where you simply put a little concealer just on the place you need it. :)
