I just used one by Feria to do my ombre in my red hair. I forgot the name of the color but it says violet black. It's gorge! It's a little more on the purple side because I did it over red. Also the John Frieda foam line has a deep burgundy I belive.

If your hair is already on the dark side (dark brown?) I would use violet black. it is black with a strong violet undertone and on natural hair, it would take fairly well. use violet wash shampoo (ice makes one) good luck preference makes a violet black.. I understand if you don't want to go that dark though..

Try Age Beautiful's Darkest Plum Brown. It's more of a purple than a red, and absolutely gorgeous.

I used Loreals rich merlot red and it was a black purple color, it looked awesome, but it faded to red after about three weeks but it still looked great... John Frieda is really good too.

If you have a way of getting ahold of professional color matrix has rv's which are red violets. I'd use a 6rv... you can slo go to sallys they should have rv's.
