what are gel nails and how do they differ from regular polish?
Oct 16, 2012
Kim P.
gel nails are thicker and they say longer than regular Polish, but you do need a uv light in order for it to dry properly

are they expensive to get in a salon?

Well it depends on What you want. if you want just a color then I would suggest shellac, but if you want tips then it varies depending on who you go to.

its important to note that gel has the potential of temporary ruining your nails. of course they'll grow out and they aren't as bad as acrylics

I totally Agree with ghia. I got shellac done once and after a few week I took them off and my natural nail look disgusting

The gel nails, after removal, completely destroyed my natural nails. It was awful and not worth it for me.

Me too! I bought the SensatioNail gel home manicure kit & it works great but the removal process really damaged my nails.

I have the gel nails done every 2-3 weeks and I love it. Stays great. Plus makes my nails strong. They've never grown so long.

I am a waitress, so gel nails are a must for me. Polish doesn't chip at ALL for at least a week and a half, and since I'm constantly using my hands to put in orders and things like that... gel nails are a Godsend. They are expensive, though, and they do make your natural nails a little weak. Gotta take the good with the bad, you know?

With gel yes it can be damaging to the nails IF a base coat is not applied, many nail artists do not use a base coat because its not needed however if used it will not damage your nails :)

If done right and removed right your nails do NOT get ruined !! I get mine done every 2 weeks with a couple times with just natural nails in between and my nails are in great condition. Calgel is my fave ! Beautiful colours

I love gel nails I bought my mom the at home gel nail system for her birthday from a sephora and she's let me use it a few times its amazing! Ur nails won't chip for a week minimum I love it :) the thing I didn't like was how expensive the kit is and how the colours cost more but that's to be expected I suppose

I work in a salon where soak off gel polish is our number one service. It should NOT hurt your nails if applied and removed properly. Ours costs $35 and we recommend Gellish brand. It stays better and has better color choices than any other brand I've seen. It's applied like regular polish but cures under a UV or LED light between coats and is dry immediately. To remove you soak a cotton ball in pure acetone, apply to the nail, and wrap in foil. Wait 10 - 15 minutes and carefully scrape off with a cuticle pusher or orange wood stick. Don't peel them off, that's where the damage starts. You should only keep them on for 2 - 3 weeks and take a break every once in a while. Good luck!!

I am in love with shellac I use it in myself and it doesn't damage nails if done well. I have tried sensationail and I reckon it sucks compared to shellac.

I am a nail tech and gel is the way to go , I am all natural in nails that I do , I do not do acrylic or gel but I do do the gel nails . The gel nails are not damaging to the nail at all if a proper base coat is applied and professionally removed . If you take the gel off your self of course your nails will be ruined .

Gel nails are thicker and last longer then more nail polish. Here my mom gets them for between $20-$30 but in New York they are around $17. Whatsoever don't pick at them or try to scrape them off they will ruin your nails. Either let them chip themselves or go back tot the salon and ask them to take it off.
