When I started out I used the lightest and darkest mac face and body, to mix any shade I would need. It's light weight and water based so it doesn't irritate as much as heavier foundations, it's also buildable to about medium coverage and can become fuller when you mix in a bit of concealer.
I also love the IMAN cream stick and cream to powder foundations which is what I've been using lately, they can be found in the drugstore, and are great if your clientele are darker tones. Their cream formulas blend beautifully into the skin and aren't heavy. These are full coverage.

To cover a wide range of skin tones and types you will need creams and liquids. Palettes will save you money. For liquid I carry FA and MAC F&B, both recommended above, and some MUFE HD as well depending on the job. For cream, RCMA and Graftobian HD are my faces, and I also like KA Sensual Skin Enhancer. For liquids buy the lightest and darkest and then some in the middle to mix, and creams in palettes. You'll also need a set of adjusters for mixing; I use the ones by Kett. I agree with the recommend above for CRC's site as well. Be sure to get pro discounts if you are already working or are a student at a school.

Depends on what kind of coverage you want to achieve. I love full coverage makeup so I use Mehron.
