How to get a neat bun?

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how to get a bun without anything like a sock bun roller thing. Thanks!

Pull your hair up like you're going to do a ponytail, brush so the top is smooth, then twist your hair until it becomes a bun shape. Does that make sense? Just take what would be the ponytail, twist, and then put a hair tie over it. Bobby pin down any loose ends :)
