It sounds like you need to change your attitude about your hair
Positive attitude = positive outcome
I've been natural most of my life & before the "movement" lol got big but maybe you should reconsider why you went natural if you prefer straight styles & it's easier for you to maintain then maybe perms are for you
But at least for me when I stopped flat ironing & just wearing my hair curly it was frustrating at first but you have to learn how to work WITH your hair & listen to it not work against it lol
Yeah it sucks when u plan out a style & it flops but that's when I spritz with some water & keep on moving! Puffs & buns are your friend on a "bad" hair day. You just have to know what your hair like and can do... I love mini twists but my hair us fine so it's not a style that works for me so I do other things.
As far as people judging you. I say eff them. Most of the people who have something bad to say bout my hair got broken off hair, are bald headed they dang selves, or live under their weave so their opinion means nothing to me. When someone with some REAL long luxurious locks got something to say bout my hair MAYBE ill consider it. People hate on your hair cuz their miserable with their own & we all know misery loves company!
Sorry for the novel hope this helps tho

Yes, I feel that way at times too. I stopped perming my hair 5 years ago and I just get press and curls or go to the dominican shop. When I try to do my hair myself, it sometimes doesn't want to act right. I've used Carol's Daughter products and organic virgin coconut oil.

When I first cut all my hair off 3 years ago and decided to go natural I definitely considered putting a perm in it. I had a mini bush and I didn't like it. I had no clue what to do with it. But now that I am 3 years natural and my hair is bra strap length I wouldn't think about perming my hair. My hair is so much healthier and longer since I don't put perms in it. But it is frustrating in the summer months when I want to flat iron my hair but I don't because I know with the humidity it won't last long.

I was tempted until I saw What's Love Got To Do With It? and Tina Turner's hair fell out because of the product. I know it's a movie but it scarred me. Plus, I color my hair and really don't want so many chemicals in my hair at once. I know it can be tempting to get a perm for a really smooth look but getting a really good press can work well too unless you want to go swimming.

I decided to go natural myself. I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos on natural hair styles, which has helped me tremendously since I have not had a perm in 4 months. Check out some YouTube videos, you will definitely learn a lot, I know I have!!! Don't give up you can do it!!!

I went natural because I lost the hair in my crown after my youngest child was born. AND I have to agree with the ladies my hair has never been healthier and I was where you are, find a good barber who will keep your edges neat and talk to other naturals.

Product ! The right product helps as well. Go see your hairstylist & spend a fraction of the $ you would spend on a chemical service , get a lesson in styling & buy some moisturizing , smoothing products . Professional shampoos and conditioners do make a difference! Smoothing creams, oils, & balms help. If its volume & thickness you want there's product for that to.
People often ask me the difference between salon & drugstore products. The difference is the science. Salon products are formulated by science teams that work for hair companies trying to 'wow' Hairstylists. Drugstore companies that make hair products also make your toothpaste.
I am a stylist myself ;) learn to work with what you have & you'll be happier in the long run without the damage of chemically altering your locks.

i see the ladies have given you great advice. i've been natural since 1998. then it wasn't the abundance of products, YT videos and stylists to help you learn about how to care for your hair. the main thing you have to do is to change that internal dialogue about your hair.
instead of saying your hair is hard to manage, you just have to find the best hair to get the result you want. that will come with trial and error honestly. and don't worry about other folk out there. most of the time i've found that people looking at you are actually admiring you. i've had folk tell me that i was brave or had courage. most say that it looks great on me but not on them. but how would they know if they hadn't tried.
just keep your hear up and you'll be just fine.

my hair has been natural for 17 years. I''ve had 4 relaxes in that time. I always end up cutting it out because my hair is healthier and easier to manage natural. and what's this about a flatiron? am I the only one old enough to know how to use straightening combs? what i'm saying is practice makes perfect. play with your hair, accessories, braids. you will find what you like and looks best on you ; ) And if all else fails braid it up and wear a wig that day! lol

I went Natural and then I relaxed my hair and loved it...BUT I respect all of those that can manage. Just like with ANY texture of hair/hairstyle/hair color ...embrace and love it! Your hair is just an extension of you. Accessorize your hair and have fun with it! Product wise, it's really trial and error like one of the ladies said. One day I will try natural hair again...I just really love my short cut right now! YouTube tutorials are a great way to find ideas for your hair!
