So I have medium to light brown hair. I want to dye it a bright color, without bleaching it. I wanted really bright fire-engine red, but I heard that's the hardest color to maintain. What colors would show up the best and would be easiest to maintain? Dye recommendations would also be helpful. Thanks!

Hi Kaitlin you should try the High Lift Colors by Loreal you can purchase these at your Local Sally Beauty. These colors us an additive and also use a high level peroxide the recommendations say to you a 30 VOLUME but you can actually use the 40 Volume if you liked it will cause a little more damage but maybe 3% more, either way your gonna damage your hair trying to manage the red. It will fade easily as all reds do make sure to use a color safe shampoo and conditioner to maintain the life of your color. I am a cosmetologist so Im not just throwing words out :] I hope this helps There is also a high lift color with the ION brand at Sally Beauty those work great as well.

If you want a super bright, fire engine red, I would go with Special Effects. Their dye seems to be brighter and last longer than a brand like Manic Panic. If you just want a bright but more natural looking red, you can really find any shade you like from the swatches at Sally's or any drugstore brand. From what it looks like in your profile picture, your hair should be light enough to show vibrant reds without bleaching. I have been through the whole spectrum of reds/oranges/gingers both natural looking and unnatural and I have done these colors over both pre lightened hair (after being blonde for a long time) and on top of my natural light/medium brown hair(which is darker than yours looks like). To make it easier to maintain, using a color depositing shampoo and conditioner can really help. Hair products made for red hair don't work as well as color depositing products. They release color into your dyed hair and you won't need to touch up the color as often. Also using a heat protectant on your hair should help as well as rinsing your hair with cooler water should help maintain the color.

If you want it super red you will have to lift it a few levels.

As far as other colors go, honestly there's no way that I know of to get vibrant colors to show up without using bleach in some way, shape, or form. As far as dyes go, though, I had a friend who dyed her hair blue, purple, and other colors with the hair dye they sell at Hot Topic. She had bright blonde hair naturally, so the colors were vibrant without bleach.
The picture is of me with pretty freshly dyed hair.

All I know from past experiences when I went from my black hair to blonde, please do go to a PROFESSIONAL and trustworthy hair salon! They did not have to bleach it and my hair did not get damaged whatsoever during and or even after the process. My hair didnt even get dry when im roots came in and my hair was getting longer. (BTW I cannot recommend a hair salon since where I had mine done was in Holland)
