If you have trouble getting a perfectly straight edge, try holding a credit card or business card (anything with a straight edge, basically) along where you want the line. Then even if it's messy, you'll still get a clean line. I used masking tape when I was first starting out with winged liner, so that I could have both hands free to apply my liner and hold my skin taut and still get a crisp line. And remember that practice makes perfect!
