So I'm confused on how being a Makeup Artist works
I'm from Wisconsin but super close to Minnesota.
I have a certification in makeup through a school.
But what do you need to be a freelance MUA?
Do you have to go to cosmetology or esthetic schooling to get your license?

A freelance artist is contracted by a company- Ex. "freelance MAC artist" are on call for MAC
the term is kind of loosely thrown around to cover "independant contract muas" which just means you work for yourself, do events, have your own clients etc.
If you're in an interview and say you freelance but mean you do your own stuff, they will ask who you freelance for.
Check your states laws about whether or not you need a license to apply makeup on another person- a lot of places you don't.

Hey, so I did a quick google search- I didn't find much but it doesn't look like you need a cosmo license for makeup- most schools I see in WI are for certificate
You should be able to work without issue- but the best way to be sure would be just go to a salon or counter and just ask.
I know for sure when you're removing anything from the body: hair, nails, skin junk (facials) you definitely need a license.
