You can try spraying your hair with a little bit of water before you start.

For some reason I've noticed my curls stay better when I use my curling iron like a wand instead of clipping it in and twisting. Not really sure why but it does. You can also get a really light weight hairspray. I'm really a fan of the Not Your Mothers line. They have a volume hairspray that is really dry and light. You almost can't tell its on. I just curl and then when I'm finished curling my entire head I fix the curls to how I want them to look and lean my head back and spray my whole head at once.

I usually dampen my hair a bit with a leave in conditioner spray. This way I don't have to use hair spray and it last me for days until I straighten it again.

Hair spray is no good for curls, use argan oil so that the curls won't stiffen. I use an argan oil by pro naturals and it leaves my hair soft and defined.
