I'm curious if anyone here has used that method to cut their hair? I want layers but I can't afford going to a salon right now. Did it work? Did you like the effect? Would you recommend it?

I haven't but my mom is a cosmetologist and she has on me. I wouldn't try that method if you aren't advanced. Just try some basic layering. This tutorial is my fave: http://youtube/SHl3Wi4ghQk.

As Symone mentioned there's many youtube vids. If you were your hair crunchy (hair gel spray etc) than go for it bc if you accidentally cut to much or too little it won't be obvious. If you typically flat iron your hair than I'd be extra careful trying this technique bc a mistake in cutting will be a little more noticeable

I'm a cosmetologist and that sounds old school and could be terrible. If your hair is uneven in texture or thickness you could end up with really bulky layers. It is kind of a basic cut but there's so much more to a cut that loping off the hair. Unless you usually go to the cheapest place don't do it.

I think a person used to quality haircuts would hate it.

Ok thanks guys, I have very fine hair and usually wear it up anyways, but I've been letting it grow out and my layers just disappeared. I mainly just wanted to add a little bit more style to my hair and was curious about this process =)

I did this - hang upside down to cut. Afterwards, a professional told me that what I had created was a "graduated" cut, not layers. So if you want to soften the shape at the end, this can work. Just use very sharp scissors and cut very little at a time.

Thank you! I did it after all and it was exactly what I needed. I'll upload a picture once I take a good one. Thanks for the replies everyone! :)

Cool! I'm glad it worked. It would work better fine fine hair then thick! I've heard of ppl who swear by it but I've never had the guts. My hair would not work that way but I'm glad yours did!
