Good afternoon, everyone.

I'm sorry for this story, but I feel like if I do not share it, I will not get the answer I am looking for.

First of let me introduce myself, My name is Megan, I am 18 years old and I have never dyed my hair before. My parents, grandparents, and even my own hair dresser have, in years past, shied me away from what they made out to be a hair-trosity. They scared me with words that my brown hair would never be the same again after I dyed it -- even if I used the wash out hair dye. So as much as I wished to dye my hair like every other woman in my family, I stayed clear from any hair altering substances. While I steered clear my much younger sister one day came home with her blond hair turned bright pink. I waited and waited for someone to explode, but no one did. Month after month she would go from blond to pink to brown to red to blond to red -- the cycle would just not end and has not ended for a year.

So now I'm in college. And I'm planning to dye my hair for this Halloween so I can be Daphne from my favorite childhood show, Scooby Doo. This would mean dying my hair from brown to red. Now here is the catch, I only want to dye my hair this one time. Though, I am still fear stricken from my parents and grandparents threats of my hair never returning to it's brown color I have become so fond of. My younger sister has suggested Manic Panic and me not bleaching my hair before application. She swears it will return to normal after a few weeks. I would just like to know if that is a true statement or if there are other products out there that will not damage my hair. I would also like to look as natural as possible.

i also attached a picture of my hair color to this post. please a sista out.

Hi Megan, well anything you put in your hair is always damaging, even blow drying or showering with hot water. They do sell non-permanent dye and the more you wash your hair the more the color will fade back to its original color. I've been dyeing my hair since I was in 6th grade and now I'm 24, so I know a thing or two about dying hair and hair care stuff. Manic panic only lasts maybe a few days at the most cause I've tried the blue and purple ones. And it won't be like a the color on the bottle or jar if the hair isn't bleached first. Now, bleaching to me is the worst thing you can do to your hair. Once you go blonde you won't be able to go back to your root color unless you growing out. But anyways, to help you out I think you should go buy a non-permanent color from Sally's beauty store. I hope my opinion helped you out;)

Semi-permanent hair color is probably your best bet. It most likely won't change your hair drastically though. Semi-permanent color can only add color to your hair so you're not going to get a Daphne red by only using semi-permanent color, because your hair seems fairly dark. And it will wash out but not completely where you'll get your original brown back, but it will be close enough.

You want to go with a temporary haircolor. The reason is the nonpermanent color has large pigment molecules that prevent penetration of the cuticle layer, allowing only a coating action that may be removed by shampooing. It will only cause a physical change, not a chemical change!

A semi-permanent is also a good choice, but the pigment molecules are slightly smaller, allowing the color to last a bit longer ( 4-6 wks). It is a physical change, not a chemical as well. Just depends on how long you want the color to last! But neither will do any damage to your natural color.

Neither of these will lighten your hair though, you will only receive a darker red bc these processes contain no peroxide! Good luck! Post a picture if you end up doing it!
