Mid tone shade?

Very stupid question I know but what exactly is a mid tone shade and how do you know the right one for your own eyes? Robert Jones always talks about this and I love his work yet I'm never able to do it on my own.

It's the medium toned shade amongst your eyeshadow selection. The one that isn't the lightest but also not the darkest- the one in between.
