Build from different lines.

There's no one line that makes everything perfectly.

You may like MAC lipstick but urban decay eyeshadow (examples)
So why stick with one brand?

I think most everyone would agree that you should have products from multiple brands in your kit. Sticking with only one keeps you extremely limited and doesn't do much for product knowledge. You can find a lot of good products from less expensive brands also; don't feel that for a product to be good, it needs to be expensive. Also, keep in mind that some brands are great for some specific products (say they have amazing foundations, for example), but could have not so great quality of another product (maybe less pigmented or easy-to-blend powders). So what I'm saying is get to know a variety of brands; don't limit yourself.

Kits can be more cost effective and sometimes when you're just starting out that's what you need more than anything. Don't feel like you need to buy up every product you lay your eyes on though. Everyone needs to start somewhere so if you buy a kit just remember to keep an open mind and constantly strive expand your knowledge of other lines when you can. I started by raiding the target make up sales and bought up 6 shades of some mousse foundation, I coupled that with my blush and shadow palettes that I bought at the Make Up Show LA and my crown brushes. I think I had some Ben Nye in there too but I don't remember using it. The important thing is to get something to start with!

Regardless of how cost effective kits can be, you should INVEST in your career decision- customizing you kit means you'll get ALOT more out of it.
