Hi guys so I have suffered with severe acne for awhile now and I recently started going back to my dermatologist in hopes that he would actually be able to clear me up this time. He has recently prescribed me prednisone which is a steroid and I decided not to take it because the side effects sound so scary and I've also read a lot that after you stop taking it you get an awful break out. I was wondering if anybody else had been prescribed this and if they took it or not.. Thanks.

I personally haven't but I also highly don't recommend it. It is VERY addictive and has horrible long term side effects, I know because my Aunt has been taking it for years. I would go back to your dermatologist and ask for something not as strong. I'm not sure what to recommend for you but here's some suggestions, try washing your face with African Black Soap, you should also try going on birth control which helps a lot of people with their acne.

My mom takes that but for arthritis instead of acne. It makes her face really big and puffy (kind of like a chipmunk) if it was me I wouldn't take it

Don't use it! Steroids are really horrible on acne prone skin. it may or will actually do the trick at first but when you stop using it,you'll get even worse breakouts than before. Go for something milder plssss.

Okay thank you guys. You basically confirmed what I already knew.. I just thought he had to have some reason for prescribing me this awful drug.. But I will definitely not be taking it.

I have never heard of oral steroids being given for acne, it is definitely not worth the side effects, my mom has arthritis and till now her doctor is trying to avoid steroids for as long as possible!
I don't recommend you taking it, just tell him you want something different :)

Find a local esthetician that specializes in acne, (usually at spas) facials and honest recommendations are always going to be given, I've had acne for years and its finally calming down once I became an esthetician and now I understand skin. best of luck sweetie!

I totally agree with Kyle, beauty spas give amazinggggg advice for your skin. My boyfriend suffers from acne and went to a spa and they gave him great recommendations.

Thank you guys for all the help! I wish I could go to an esthetician but unfortunately I've heard they are very expensive!

Just go to a spa and talk to someone. my boyfriend didn't need an appointment or anything he just asked the people what they recommend and it was totally free

I would switch dermatologists. It doesn't seem like this one has done anything for you in the past and isn't doing much for you now. If he's prescribed you something you aren't comfortable taking and that has such bad side effects it doesn't sound like he's listening to you very well, which is a little scary in my opinion. If it's possible I would go to a different one if for no other reason than to get a second opinion and to hear some other options.
And this may not work for everyone and is an expensive investment but my acne has cleared up so much when I got a Clarisonic. I'm not constantly broken out anymore and my breakouts heal a lot faster than they used to. If that isn't an option going to a spa like others have suggested would also be a good place to go x
