Diluting box dye??

So I'm looking to gradually and gently lighten my hair, I'm a medium/dark brownish mess lol
I purchased a garnier olia medium blond and I'm wondering if I add some conditioner to the mix will it dilute it so I don't go over board with the blond too fast? Also I have a ton of hair and one box dye (I know I know) so if I can spread it farther that would be cool too lol any info will help thanks
