Maybe I'm doing it too much then -- I have oily skin and it breaks out if I put a break in my regimen.

No more than twice a week. You're definitely doing it too much. The transition period will be hard, but you should start trying to do it less. I bet that your skin is probably over producing oil because your exfoliating so much. Try doing it 2-3 times a week at most.

^never ever more that twice a week. If you do it more your messing with your faces' natural PH balance and your elastin and you collagen will get jacked in the process (collagen and elastin keep your face from sagging, through age they start to deplete but using proper serums and exfoliating no more than twice a week keep it it from happening so much. But if you overdo it it's harsh and your face could react in a bad way)

I have an exfoliating face wash that I use twice a day. It's not to harsh but keeps my skin smooth. If I don't exfoliate every day my skin feels bad so I just use something gentle. I don't use harsh exfoliations as they make my skin sore :)

I exfoliate with my St Ives scrub every night as part of my nightly skin care regime. I guess I should start doing it every 3rd day when I was my hair.. oops! lol but my skin isn't looking bad, its actually been pimple free for awhile.

Well I use my clarisonic 2x a day and that may be too much for thin skinned people lol but it works great for me.
as far as using a scrub I use a sea salt scrub once a week or every other week since my clarisonic works pretty well and it's very gentle. I use the brush head for acne since it's the most gentle (I hear it is more gentle than both the sensitive and gentle head)
I mean if youre using products with lactic, glycolic, salicylic acid or use apple cider vinegar or other acids derived from fruit you are technically exfoliating any time you use those products. they just aren't as harsh as scrubs. so when people say onky exfoliate once to twice a week they usually mean a scrub which is understandable since they can be extremely drying

Alpha hydroxy acids/aha to be exact ;)

I used to use my clarisonic twice a day, but slowly it changed I think its due to me not remembering to keep it charged. (How sad is that?)

Alessia makes a good point about exfoliating acids. the thing about exfoliation is that even though there's "experts" out there who say you should only exfoliate this many times a day/week its really about your individual skin type. some people do it 1 to 2 times a day where others only do it once to a few times a week. its all about what keeps your own skin looking healthy.
