Sooooo, I haven't ever been to Ulta before because we didn't have one near me. The closest beauty store is Sephora and it's about 20-30 minutes away depending on traffic. So we just opened an Ulta about 5 minutes from my house and I was super excited. I have been wanting to go to Sephora and get a couple foundation samples but I thought Hey, I'll just go to Ulta since it's so much closer. I was really really disappointed when the girl told me they don't do samples. I was wanting the Lorac Natural Performance and the Benefit Oxygen Wow. When I asked for them she looked at me like I was dumb. Just kind of bummed.
Is this the same practice at all Ulta's or just mine? I didn't mind paying for samples even but she said not at all.

From my experience the only sample they give is for Lancôme foundation. I asked for a sample of UD Naked and was told they didn't give samples. Well I bought it anyway and returned it a couple days later. I asked why and they told me they had a great return policy and to just bring it back if I didn't like a product.

I do understand they have a great return. So I get that, but if I get a sample and I don't like it, I don't have to drive back to return it, hope I didn't lose the receipt and spend the time making an exchange. If I don't like the sample, I don't like the sample, done. Plus I can't afford to buy 2 or 3 different foundations at a time to try out just to go back and return 1 or all of them. I may just be a butthole, but they have all those testers out there and I could stand there and pump half a bottle onto my hand if I felt like it but they won't give a sample.
I do want to say though, the place is gigantic and I drooled the second I walked in the door. I will definitely be a regular customer there. But I will be getting my samples from Sephora ;)

Both of my local ULTA stores have given me samples. Generous samples too. I guess its up to each individual store manager.

Marcy I totally agree with you. I was in shock when they wouldn't give me samples... And like you I was shocked. I mean why would you want your customers to buy the product then return it if it doesn't work? Doesn't that mess up their sales vs inventory etc? Honestly I have to try foundation samples before I buy them... I'm kind of picky when it comes to foundations and concealers. For that reason I switched to Estée Lauder because I could try the foundation to see if it worked for my skin. Luckily it did. I still love ulta. The closest sephora to me is over an hour away. Plus I hate returning stuff. I always feel kind of awkward when a product doesn't work out... And they always ask me what the reason is for the return... I should start saying "because I didn't get a sample" :)

I only go to ulta for the sales. I don't think their people are as we'll trained and knowledgable about products as Sephora. I pretty much stay away.

ULTA is good but as with any store you have to do your own research before taking in what a sales person says to you. I'll listen to the pitch but ultimately I have the final say as to what I buy.

Last time I went to Ulta I purchased UD 24/7 eyeliner. I asked for a sample of their moonshadow eyeshadow, they said they didn't have any. But instead came out with a full size sample of UD lipliner and a sample of Juicy Nior. I guess it just depends on where you live. I'm in Cali.
