Hello artists. I just had to share some info that could be of serious benefit to you freelance artists trying to get your names out there with additional clients. Over the weekend another bodybuilder told me about this young make-up artist who was getting her hustle on at a convention center before an IFBB event. She asked all incoming athletes who were coming in for line-up if they needed their make-up done for the competition which was set for the next day. The artist charged $60 cash for theatric make-up (a must while on stage with a ton of lights hitting you) that included lashes. In matter of 15-20(per person) she pulled off a full face for 10 athletes the day of the event. She handed out business cards and flyers as well for return business. The day of a competition for us can be quite stressful and with multiple worries on our plates the last thing we want to be doing is trying to apply lashes with a nervous hand. If anyone is interested, just list your city and state and I can pull up future events for you. Stage make-up is strongly preferred since it needs to stand up to the heat of stage lights and the face needs to be clearly visable to the judges.

This sounds like a fun opertunity. What does IFBB stand for? I live in the Bronx,NYC but willing to travel. Thanks for the info!

international federation of body builders.

Last year I started doing fitness makeup and Shelley is right, you can make a KILLING doing it, especially at the competitions. Aside from the competitions, those competitors are frequently doing photoshoots and need makeup for that as well. There are also a LOT of photographers at those events that is well worth networking with. Most of them only do fitness photography and always are booked and need makeup artists. A good portion of my year last year was strictly fitness work, it was fun and good money!

Bev Francis is one event....its not a governing body. But the IFBB is the grand daddy. Lauren C. you're on point...we're always doing photoshoots that is tied in with sponsorships and even calendar work. I was in NYC the other day taking shots for my own calendar.

The other governing body is the NPC (National Physique Committee). What's nice about the industry is that events are happening year around. There is no "season" for the sport so you will definitely have constant work year round once you get a following. I've been working exclusively with one artist going on two years now and she has traveled with me to out of state competitions. She has truly been my good luck charm...though now I have to book her far in advance sometimes because as of lately she has been getting fitness work overseas. And connecting with the photographers is vital.

Naomi B. yes, there are events year round that take place in NYC/tri-state area. There was a big one just this past weekend.

I'm glad I posted this....this is an untapped market and it would be great to see more artists market themselves to fitness competitors. Your services make us feel beautiful on stage. :)

i would love to do this but i think i need to build my kit more. i have MAC's studio sculpt foundation... would that work under harsh light? and the competitors want a dramatic look? or does it depend?

I never really paid attention to what the other artists are using as far as foundations go but mine doesn't use MAC foundation on me (she tried it once and by the time I hit the stage I was an oily mess). She actually made a custom blend for me so my skintone is uniformed with the rest of my body since I have to use a self tanner from the neck down (dark bronzy glowy skin helps with the muscle definition). A lot of us like to have a dramatic look on stage so our faces don't 'disappear' under those crazy lights. I've seen some women just do a heavy cat eye with thick lashes and a red lip/or pink lip. But the vast majority of us go dramatic. I would say build your kit up in lashes, blush, contour powders, blushes, and go for heavy duty foundations that do not have sunscreen in it to avoid the white cast in photos.
