Here's what I did: Watch a lot of youtube videos and follow lots of beauty blogs, and practice. By the time I actually went to beauty school, I basically knew everything! Here's the link to my blog where I post makeup looks and picture tutorials, you're welcome to join! http://rachelshuchat.blogspot.ca/

Go to makeup workshops and seminars from professionals in the industry that are doing the type of work that you want to do. The Makeup Show had classes by Billy B. (does makeup for Pink and Lady Gaga), Tia Danzler (does makeup for Jennifer Hudson) and more! Learn from those who are doing the type of makeup you want to do. If you want to do film then look for classes from Ve Neill. Do research on makeup artists and you will be surprised how much training you can get from the pros.

I completely agree with Candace. Another way to break into the industry and make a lot of contacts is to work in retail at a makeup counter. I honestly can't think of a single professional makeup artist who hasn't worked at one. Not only will you get trained on the products, ingredients and get to practice and hone your mu skills, but you will usually be surrounded by vets that you can learn a lot from. I learned a LOT from my two years at Nordstrom. Nothing better than learning hands-on. Also, find out who the well-respected and established makeup artists are in your area and ask if you can shadow them for a day or offer to be an apprentice.

You also get free product, and you are informed about "the looks" for the upcoming seasons so you are always "in the know". I started in the industry as a freelance regional makeup artist and became a national makeup artist. Then my work changed to print, magazines and TV.

Thanks Candace! I can't believe that I forgot to mention the free product "gratis" - which is also a great way to start building your professional kit!

Youtube is very helpful but one piece of advice is to know your products! Different products work better with some then others. I recently started a blog reviewing a few different products check it out sometime!
