I want to dye my dark brown hair to a lighter brown color for summer time. The home treatments to lighten hair don't work for me and I am willing to dye my hair just not bleach it. Is this possible?

Don't do box. go to a professional, otherwise youll end up with orange hair. there is a shampoo they sell at sally beautys, in a purple bottle, that is for lightening hair, it does have colors and toners in it but not a lot. that would take a good amount of time. the only real quick way is bleach. try highlights and keep building on them until your happy with the color.

You could use lemon juice and sun it it will leave a more redish finish I think.

1. Dye your hair a lighter color with a permanent dye. Color of your choice , keep dyeing it that same color till you get the right color. But you have to wait 3/4 weeks to dye it a permanent color
2. Bleach it and get a rinse the color you want..
I'd pick 1 it's easier! =)

A purple toner? Why purple just wondering?

Purple toner/shampoo won't lighten your hair. It's intended for use on lightened hair to get rid of unwanted yellow tones, it won't lighten your hair at all.
DON't USE BOX COLOR. It's terrible for your hair, and it just makes more work for your stylist when you go in for a color correction when it turns out poorly.
Professional color will allow you some variability on lightening without using bleach at all.
Go to a good stylist and explain your hesitancy about using bleach, and they will be able to discuss your options in more detail.

Oh, and this is assuming that you haven't already colored your hair, if you have, bleach is your only option..

Laura is correct, purple shampoo won't lighten your hair...
Try using a "high lift" permanent color from Sally's. I do not know much about them, but I have heard of Loreal's "HiColor" (permanent) dyes which should lift your naturally dark hair and result in a lighter color!

Just get a shade lighter of the color you want and dye it, do not bleach it its not necessary
