For the past few months I've had my hair black. It was nice for winter but I feel it'd be nice to have it little lighter for summer.
I'm looking for any tips or ideas for fading my colour out without using bleach or anything too harsh.
I'm looking to eventually get it to a medium/chocolate brown colour.

Try lemon juice.

I've heard head and shoulders really strips color out if you let it sit in your hair. I know how difficult black can be to get out. I went nuts trying to lighten mine and just hacked it off and started over.

Use dawn as shampoo everytime you take a shower. It opens the cuticles & allows the color to slowly slip out. Sadly there's no other way except poor maintenance or STRIPPPPPPP. :p.

Head shoulders mixed with baking soda will help it fade but itll only fade to a washed out black so when you try adding a brown colour will look just as dark again. itll have to be chemicals to lift properly.

Those are good suggestions as an alternative to color but they throw off the phone balance of your hair and open your cuticle an extreme amount which can be damaging and cause frizz and split ends. my suggestion is if your going to do any of it just make sure you do a few conditioning treatments afterwards and use a demi permanent color. yes, it will fade out but the integrity of your hair is worth the maintenance!

I heard vitamin c fades color. I haven't tried it so I can't verify. But I heard if you crush up vitamin c pills and make it into a paste, let it sit on your hair for 45 minutes it'll strip dye without damaging your hair

Thanks for all these suggestions! Definitely going to try some of them out. I have heard baby shampoo works but I've never tried it but I've also heard it can mess with the ph balance of your hair.

Use a clarifying shampoo... It strips out the color. Make sure you use a good conditioning treatment with it cuz it will dry out your hair. I went from black to brown to blonde in 3 months.
