I was going to say that! Exactly what I was thinking. But the thing about smoking is, not only does it affect you but others as well!

Allie, how do you prevent damage from the tanning bed? CLEARLY, I don't tan lmao but I feel like I'd be able to transfer how to protect my skin into real life for summer days, etc.

They have special lotions for tanning bed. Nothing is 100%, but they help!

I suggest not tanning your face. It really does cut down on the wrinkles. Speaking as someone almost ahem...50.

Hmm I guess all those drs who deal with melanoma patients daily and all the studies that have been conducted are wrong. Who would have thought tanning was actually beneficial?

They aren't wrong! You can still get skin cancer and other problems. But every since I have been tanning my eczema has basically gone away. I still get a little when I stressed! I haven't had a breakout since tanning as well! There are negatives and positives to everything.

Lol no I know I had the same thing and mine usually clears in the summer. I've just known so many people die of skin cancer it's scary to think people willingly get into tanning beds or lay out in the sun for vanity purposes. I have never been a fan of tanning and only did it for prom years ago. I have seen so many people experience horrible things because of their previous sun exposure I wear SPF 110 everyday in the summer and at least 20 on my face in the winter.

Every time I get into a bed I think about it. And in my family we have a lot of cancer! It's always in the back of my mind. But It has helped my skin so much! It's a risk I am willing to take. We all have bad habits and tanning is mine. Plus now these days it feels like you can get cancer from anything.

Tanning IS bad for you. People who deny this are people who choose to ignore the overwhelming and irrefutable evidence of that fact. It doesn't matter if its a crappy tanning bed or a high end job with diamond-encrusted 14k gold bulbs... It's all UV and its your skins worst enemy. Beside the proven carcinogen aspect, please bear in mind that UV rays are the #1 cause of skin aging. The resulting tan that we get when we expose our skin to the sun/UV rays is our body's defense mechanism.
But... I'm sure the original poster has heard this all before. If you do choose to use a tanning bed to tan, keep your makeup on... At least it can offer a tiny bit of protection.

When I used to tan, I took all my makeup off before because tanning opens up your pores. I also used to put on a mild SPF with bronzer in it. The mild SPF prevented irritation to the sensitive skin on my face, and the bronzed in it helped even out the tan I got (like most people, my face tans splotchy and I prefer not to leave on the face bulbs for the whole time). Then after I would use a stridex/noxema pad to scrub the sweat, dead skin, and built up tan lotion off of my face. If you don't feel like reapplying a whole face of makeup, take a one step bb, mascara, and a face/lip stick you can use for a quick dab of blush and color.

***I would like to add that I no longer tab because my father died of skin cancer, and I started noticing changes in a few birthmarks. I gave my advice because that's what worked for me, but please consider the risks with yourself truthfully.

My father died of lung cancer? Yet people still are smoking..what are you going to do?
People know things are bad for them..yet they still do them.
If you tan every single day for 5 years for 15 minutes?..who wouldn't get something wrong with them? Tanning every two keeps for 6-8 minutes..probably not going to do as much damage. EVERYTHING in this world you need to limit yourself, your you will die some how!!

TANNING IS BAD! Later on in life, your face will hate you for it. I know you probably do not want to hear it, but I've worked closely with some skin care experts and seen up close the long term damages of sun damage. I'm talking just normal everyday exposure and not tanning. Tanning causes pre mature aging. While you may not notice it now, you will later on. It also causes sun spots and discoloration. I've worked with countless clients with major sun spots. I've also worked with countless older clients that regret ever tanning. Like I said, you probably don't want to hear it, but it's true. It's not a matter of limiting it. It's not doing it. Wear a sunscreen on your face. It doesnt matter if you have makeup on when you tan, just wash your face good at night. The real question is.. why are you so concerned about make up hurting your skin and not uv rays. I had a friend that just tanned every year for prom. She was diagnosed with Melanoma when she was 19. That was from just a total of probably going 4 times a year, for 4 years. Just something to think about. I, also, had a client who had to get all the skin removed on her upper lift (a few layers deep) because she developed melanona after just tanning during the summer time in her 20's. Make an appt and go see a dermatologist. Let them do a scan on you. They can show you under special lightings with cameras what your skin looks like and what damage has been done.

I started tanning when I was like 15, and to get back to the topic at hand: I just never wore makeup when I knew I was going to go. If I knew I was going to do it on my lunch hour, or on a day where I was going to need makeup after I would just wait until after I tanned and then I would do my makeup in the car, or at my work desk. In the even that I had to wait until after work, I would just bring one of the million travel sizes of my cleanser that I own with me to wash my makeup off, or you could always get some makeup removing wipes.

Anything is bad for you if it's excessive. Wearing makeup alone can cause premature aging and congested skin if you aren't conscious about the ingredients you use and don't take care to remove it correctly. Cleansing with sulfates too often can cause dryness, and the premature formation of wrinkles. Exfoliating too often can ruin your skin's natural protective barrier , cause loss of elasticity, and hyper pigmentation due to the skins increased sensitivity to any amount of sunlight. The list is infinite, and none is really better or worse than the other. Going a few times a month isn't that bad, especially if you wear broad spectrum sunscreen all over to block the excessive and harmful UVB/UVA rays that you are exposed to in that little amount of time. I have an unhealthy obsession with taking care of my skin, and even spoke to my dermatologist about this when I first started visiting her and she said that based on how often I was going, and the preventative measures I took that the damage would be minimal unless I either quit using a sunscreen or started going more than just a few times a month. I don't tan anymore just because I grew out of it, but I still wear spf 30 everyday all over my body.

I'm a smoker, anyone want to come at me crazy on that? Lol.

And to add to this: People with hispanic, african american, or tropical ethnic backgrounds in general are able to handle more exposure to sun, because evolution has given us more melanin to protect us from harmful uva/b rays that our ancestors were exposed to on a daily basis. You ever wonder why African Americans age so gracefully? They can withstand hours in the sun without experiencing any damage to the skin, while a caucasian individual or someone with just low melanin amounts can only be out for 15 minutes unprotected before damage is incurred.

I don't tan anymore either all for the fact that my skin started peeling and i wasn't even burnt yet lol. But I can agree somewhat with becca. If you want to be darker and don't want fake bake then use of a tanning bed si the only option. A tanning bed does not give you the same rays that the sun does. The sun gives you radiation, X-rays,Gama rays, microwave rays and UV rays all at once. Studies have shown that Gama is the only one that acutely causes cancer (a cluster of cells that rapidly grow) even when standing in front of a MICROWAVE is risking it too. The only thing to kills these cells is the radiation it self. Strange huh? Even though more studies show that if you tan regularly it does raise your risk for melanoma. But hey some people think if I'm gonna die I'm gonna die happy. I'd leave your makeup on btw More protection and less of a hassle. use a towel for your face if it gets too hot or open the tanning bed for some air and cool your face off for a sec.
