So going to be stripping my hair but wondered why you have to put semi dye on top.

Because when you strip your hair you need to deposit color into your hair and that's what semi permanent does. Permanent hair color lifts the color from your hair. The times I've stripped my hair I applied the semi permanent color and after a week I apply the permanent hair color.
