I just received some extra money and I would like to spend it on ridiculously high quality brushes. So I head to Hakuhodoo's website. I realize there that I can pick between the fur of different animals. How do I know what to pick? Does the hair from different animals do different things?
I just want to replace my Sigma brushes (I like my BDellium and Kevyn Aucoin) with Japanese made high quality brushes. That's all I know. If anyone can give me some direction on how to select the brushes, that would be amazing!!

I was hoping she might see my post and comment! I ask her a ton of questions so I didn't want to bug her directly again. She is definitely the sensei!

Yes please!! She gave me some great advice on japanese brushes a while back! But I'm also coming to some extra money and would like to up my game!!
My first japanese brushes were Wayne Goss's, then I got some Koyudo and Chikuhodo T-1.
In your opinion, which are the Hattori Hanzo of the makeup brush world??
(Not that I would get it right now, I'm still working my way up as Sensei Jacqueline recommended. I'm just curious)

Marcy, Alma just turned me into her. I'm not big on YouTube beauty, but she's very thorough and precise. Kathryn, I think you'd really enjoy her brush info.

Oh thank you ladies so much!! I just a week ago found Stephanie Nicole on YT and I adore her! That video she did on Morphe, just wow.
Anyway thank you!! I'll be going search for that video. 😃😃❤️❤️

I just watched her favorite/most used brushes video and that was an enormous help since I'm looking to step up my own brush and shadow game. If you haven't seen it, I'll link it below. She has some pricey brushes mixed in with less expensive options and discusses the brush fibers, hair, wear, etc. at length. The first video looks at hair vs. synthetic. The 2nd, her all-time favorites.

Just a note, she goes into tremendous detail about various hair types and Japanese Brushes in her Wayne Goss entire brush collection video. :)

After watching her videos I'm tempted to make it easy on myself and just order the Wayne Goss collection. The world of brushes and what hair works best for what can be confusing!
I'm looking specifically for eyeshadow brushes that will help me blend without making mud. I have a few in my cart here, still thinking on it. I'm surprised that some of the Chikuhodo brushes are under $20. I'm still doing homework and trying to decide exactly which brushes I want to go with. I'm being high maintenance about this one!

A couple of the girls on here (Jackie included) posted some really helpful info in an old thread of mine about the different types of hair and what's best for your skin type. (http://www.beautylish.com/t/ixjiqx/hakuho-do-sephora-pro-brush-collection) Hope that helps! I'm just venturing off the deep end of high end brushes myself so I'm just as lost! lol So far I've ordered the Chikuhodo Z-3 & Z-10 brushes (Should be here tomorrow if you'd like me to post pics) and I am eyeing the Kevyn Aucoin set at Neiman's.
I own the Wayne Goss fan brush and while I liked it at first it has started to shed terribly. :( Have any of you guys experienced shedding with his brushes?
Jun 17, 2016
Kathryn R.
I have one of his brushes, I think it's the contour brush and it hasn't shed on me. I've gone through the Chikuhodo site and picked out some brushes. I got up to $400 so I had to go back and take a few away. At this point I'm pretty sure I've got it narrowed down to some individual Chikuhodo and the Wayne Goss set. At some point in just going to throw my hands in the air and order them and just know they'll be good because they're good. Lol!

Lol! That's pretty much what I've been doing this past week. But like you said at least you know they'll be good so there isn't too much of a risk.

I own the holiday collection and the eye set plus some individual brushes from Goss's line, and I haven't experienced any shedding! I'm super happy with them :)
I do not own his fan brush tho, so I can't say much about that particular one. I'm no expert in brushes (just an enthusiast) but the way fan brushes hold the bristles seems different, so maybe (and this is just conjecture) that particular brush isn't constructed as well as the others?? I always get the feeling that fan brushes are a bit

Mar F.
(Sorry, here's the continuation) a bit too frail for my taste in general...
The rest of his brushes tho, are the perfect combination of sturdy and delicate :) you will love them if you get them, I definitely encourage you to do it!
Also, I just saw on Instagram Wayne just came out with a new brush!! I'm really excited about that one. I wonder when it will be available here on BL :D
Kristen, let us know what you end up doing with the Kevyn Aucoin set! I've had my eye on that one too, but somehow I find it hard to drop that kinda cash on any set of non-japanese brushes (specially considering that a few of them are synthetic)
Jun 18, 2016
Jacqueline H.
I have a few Wayne Goss brushes and I have never experienced shedding of any kind. Are the bristles coming out in clumps Kristen?
When it comes to Fan brushes, they are made just like any other brushes are made, and if you want me to go into that I can, but a for a fan, the biggest difference is the shape of the ferrule.
I have 2 Kevyn Aucoin sets and I love them, I wouldn't trade them for anything. I don't know which set you are considering, but for the price, you really are getting a set of well thought out brushes that are actually cheaper collectively I n terms of buying the same brushes from a Japanese line. : They are all expertly crafted: Lucite encased handles, quality bristle, sturdy collars that are double-crimped to hold the bristles tightly in place. If taken care of properly, these brushes will last you for years and years. I just love how these brushes feel in my hands.
Kathryn, there are so many Japanese brush brands: Koyudo, Takeda, Koyudo, Koyomo, Tanseido, Kyureido, Fu-Shikaden, Yojiya, Kashoen, Kihitsu, I could go on and on and on...The problem, if you want to call it a problem is getting these brushes in the US. Thank goodness we can easily purchase Chikuhodo and Hakuhodo brushes where we don't have to go on a plethora of Japanese web sites to try and get some of these other brands. There are a few good sites like Fude Japan and Kohlindo, but it can get complex in terms of ordering and conversion rates and whatnot.
Any brush that comes out of Kumano it top notch. Chikuhodo and Hakuhodo make some of the best brushes on the planet, and if you start getting deeper into Japanese brushes, you'll never get out, and you'll end up with an $1,800 brush that really is not much different than a top of the line Hakuhodo S100 or Kouyudo. You want the softest, most rare grey squirrel brushes? Chikuhodo Z series brushes. You won't find better brushes offered up in this range anywhere, period. Every single hair is hand picked for these brushes.... Yes, every single hair.
If you really want a nice set of brushes that are crafted in Japan that pretty much no one else talks about... Jenny Patinkin. Super beautiful brushes with a Swarovski crystal built into the handle... Gorgeous. If you say you have a set of Jenny Patinkin's most people will look at you like a deer lost in the headlights. ;) Here's a link if you want to check them out.

Mar - Will do! It probably won't be for a little while though. Even though I know it’s worth it in the long run the price is quite steep so I’ll have to save up a little bit for it. lol
Jackie - Not in clumps. If I run my finger across the top at least 4-5 bristles will fall out each time. Other than the recent shedding I do love the brush. Do you think if I deep cleaned it that might help? Maybe there were some bristles that didn’t get placed in the ferrule correctly and the cleaning might get rid of them? I’m scared they’ll all come out if I try. lol
And the essential Kevyn Auccoin set is the one that I’ve been looking at. (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/Kevyn-Aucoin-The-Essential-Brush-Collection/prod165510158/p.prod) I already own the foundation brush and absolutely love it. When I get to use it that is... My sister seems to love coming over here to steal that one. lol

Hmmmm, well floaters aren't unusual, but most brush makers use a specialized type of comb that removes some floaters which did not fully set in the epoxy that secures the base of the knot. During the first few months of breaking in a brush, these last remaining loose hairs may manage to work their way free from the brush. it should stop by about your third cleansing of the brush. If you have washed this brush 3 times, and this is still going on, I would contact Beautylish about it because unless you are trying to highlight a shark's skin with some Becca Champagne Pop, there should be no reason that should be happening.
That Kevyn Aucoin set is worth the money, I love mine. :)

Do you have any Rae Morris brushes Kristen?
Jun 18, 2016
Kristen W.
My skins not great but definitely not on shark skin level yet! lol! I will have to give it a couple washes and see how that goes. Thanks! :)
I haven't tried any Rae Morris brushes yet. I was checking out the collection set on beautylish since it's around the same price as the Kevyn Aucoin set and you get 20 brushes with it. But the fact that I haven't seen a whole lot of reviews (Good or Bad) made me a little hesitant to purchase them.

Overall, I am truly pleased with her brushes. I remeber watching Wayne Goss' video review of her brushes, and he just kept repeating, 'Why didn't I think of this?' LOL!
I have pretty large hands, and I was shocked at the size of her Radiance brush...It's HUGE...Her brushes are really quite sleek and multi-functional, and I love the magnetic aspect. What I was a little putt off on is how small the Rae Plate actually is. If you were going to buy her complete collection, you'd need 2 plates in my opinion, and you'd have to purchase the magnetic attachments that are specifically made for her Ultimate Shader, Ultimate Cheek bone, Square Kabuki and her Radiance brush. You could also go for the Rae frame as well if you want to spend an extra $66. There are some really nice Blue Squirrel shadow brushes that are very reasonably priced. :)

Holy crap, that sucker is huge! I’d think you’d easily end up with a zebra highlight stripe with it being that large. 😂 I like the magnet feature as well but I’m such a klutz I’d probably just end up knocking them over anyway. lol I’m going to go check out Wayne’s review after this but if you had to choose between the Kevyn Aucoin or the Rae Morris set which do you think is the better investment overall?
By the way, I got the Z-10 in the mail today! I love it so far! Thank you for the recommendation! :)
Jun 18, 2016
Jacqueline H.
I'm glad you are liking the Z10 so far, it's by far my favorite pencil brush. I use the Rae Morris Radiance brush to touch up foundation, to apply my Hourglass Ambient powders and for body work. ;)
I like them both for different reasons, so I'm going to change your question up a bit. If it was a mandatory decision...if I was told I'd have to give up my Kevyn brushes or my Rae Morris brushes, I'd hand over my Rae Morris brushes before I my Kevyn Aucoin brushes... either way, I'd still be bummed out.
I think there are some single Rae brushes that can fill in the gaps of anyone's brush collection. I absolutly adore Rae's Ultimate Cheekbone brush. This brush is a must have in my opinion. I wrote a review on the brush here, don't know if you saw it:
http://www.beautylish.com/s/rae-morris-brush-3-ultimate-cheekbone
I also love her Flawless Shader brush. I use this one to shade and sculpt. I love how quickly you can shade the jawline, hairline and body with this brush. It makes a good overall finishing brush as well. I liken it to a Hakuhodo Fan brush. LOVE IT!
Brushes can be so personal... How they feel in the hands...how they are weighted... all personal preference. Lot's of people love Morphe brushes, but I honestly don't get the hype... In my opinion, they are generic cheaply made brushes stamped with Morphe's logo. People go Morphe crazy, so call call me crazy, because I'd rather buy a solid BDellium Maestro brush that I know will outperform and outlast anything that Morphe puts out. I've been to the Morphe store in Burbank, and I wasn't overtly impressed with any brush. There are tons of Morphe brush lovers out there, but I am not one of them. The cheap ends up becoming expensive, so I refrain from Morphe. Not my bag, but to each their own. ;)
Sorry for the mini rant. ;/ If you can, I would definitely incorporate the Rae Cheekbone and the Rae shader into your collection. ;)

I have Rae's Kabuki set and I love it!
Jacqueline, I can see some tiny cracks around the holes in the wood. That appeared on my brushes too after the first time I washed them. Is that normal? Do they get worse with time? Does it affect the brush's performance? That is probably my only concern about the set.
And I will definitely start to save up for the Kevyn Aucoin set :) if you say its worth it, it must be!
Tomorrow if I have time I will check out Jenny Patinkins brushes :)
