Applying less foundation or thinning it out will make it look more natural, but it will cover less. Heavier coverage that is able to cover blemishes well will generally look unnatural. Which is more important to you, looking natural or covering your blemishes. I struggle with the same predicament. I find that using a thin layer of a high coverage foundation gives me a satisfactory balance of natural looking & coverage rather than applying multiple layers of a light or medium coverage foundation. Prepping your skin with a primer suited to your skintype will also help achieve a smoother application.

Apply your foundation lighter. To cover blemishes, first apply primer then I color correct with a mint concealer and blend, apply my foundation lightly avoiding my blemishes, then go over my blemishes with a concealer that matches my skin tone. I always go over my skin with a translucent loose powder to give it a more matte look, and it also covers whatever my concealer didnt. Hope this helped:)

Beauty blender and I think spraying with mac fix + would help for a dewy natural look.
