For photos would a matte liquid lipstick or lipgloss look best? Also is a lighter or darker shade better?

Use matte lipsticks in a light or dark shade. They both look great in photos that I have seen.

Depends on the look you're going for.
Glossy looks more fun, young and kind of summery IMO
Matte lips look more mature and can look more...formal especially the darker shades.
As far as shades, I prefer lighter and bold shades.
I'm not too fond of the darker shades (like black) cause I find that they make people look older
