I always get dry skin on my forehead and around my nose even when I exfoliate, there is always really dry skin around those areas but how can I get rid of this? What are really good hydrating moisturisers and exfoliaters? Nothing too expensive! Thank you girls!:)

Cerave moisturizing cream. The ceramides in it really help heal the skin and will actually help your skin overall. I can actually skip using it and my skin isn't nearly as dry as it once was, it's not normal now.

As far as exfoliation, I just buy loofah pads and use it with a sulfate free cleanser a couple of times a week.

I know a lot of people would recommend a chemical exfoliant but I don't find that they help with the initial flakiness, I mean the flakiness will still be there for a bit

Can I ask what sulfate free cleaner do you use and what difference does it make being sulfate free?

Are you prone to acne or coconut oil sensitive? Thick moisturizers can be tricky for some skin. I've found Chemical Exfoliation and light layers of moisture to be my saving grace. I'm always looking for dual approaches; long term and then immediate improvement.

Alpha Hydrox has AHA products at a perfect pH to gently exfoliate and keep skin fresh with Anti-aging properties. Drugstore.com, Dermstore and Walgreens all have the Alpha Hydrox (Alpha Skincare Line). I'd recommend starting one night a week, applying CeraVe PM Lotion (with the pump) atop before bed, 15 minutes after my AHA absorbed. I'd also invest in a hydrating toner, such as Paula's Choice Recovery for Dry/Very Dry skin. Amazing toner for bringing hydration. A moisturizer in sunscreen, such as CeraVe AM may also help. I prefer MAC Strobe Cream as a primer these days, but if you aren't mineral oil sensitive or acne prone then Embryolisse Lait-creme Concentrate is fantastic for priming dry areas. With the warmer weather, I prefer the Strobe Cream, which is more acne friendly in my view. Aquaphor is fantastic and contains Panthenol to calm skin. I view this as a treatment for dry patches now and again. Vegetable glycerin would certainly be an inexpensive way to bring moisture to your skin. Pure aloe, another great option.

If you aren't using facial oils, you might want to give one a try. I sometimes add a tiny drop of oil to my foundation, but if you have combo skin that might not be a viable option. For immediate banishing of flakes, Philosophy Microdelivery Wash is my go to. You can get a small one for about $15 and it lasts forever. I find a damp, all cotton nubby washcloth to be a favorite way to immediately exfoliate..especially after my wash and even for my lips. Mac Fix+ should also help. MUFE Face and Body is my holy grail and will not cling to dry patches. You can build coverage to medium, but it's very light and feels so good, slightly dewy and luminous. You can add pigment with Cover FX drops to bring it to full if you'd prefer.
I'd avoid high alcohol setting sprays such as the Urban Decay formulas. It will increase your preaent dryness. Check labels to avoid denatured alcohol, alcohol sd, isopropyl...after look for fatty alcohols instead, such as the ones present in thr CeraVe line. Look for Hyaluronic acid (such as CeraVe) in products. There's a booster available at Paula's Choice I enjoy adding to my own favorite skin care when I need extra hydration l. Amping up Omega 3 in your diet should also help your skin health. You might want to boost your hydrating foods such as cucumbers..they are a great on dry eyes externally as well if you want to unwind.

I use my fingers or a damp sponge/Beauty Blender as brushes can sometimes stir up flakes. Sunscreen is a must with AHA and I can't stress enough how important it is. Hope that's of help.

I agree with Aurora on the jar cream, but for Spring/Summer it's too rich for my own skin so I opt for the lotion and light layers of hydration.

I agree with an AHA it's the most gentle form of exfoliation out there - any abrasive exfoliant will just dry out your skin even more - and yes facial oils are great I like jojoba oil personally it's very moisturizing but not heavy and doesn't clog pores since I'm acne prone

Thank you girls!:) I'll be looking into that and I do use jojoba oil and I do add one or two drops into my foundation but I always see flakey skin and it's so annoying but thank you!

Do you also think I should look into clarisonic? Mauve one that isn't too expensive, and I don't have a walgreens here in London, would I still be able to get alpha hydrox,

I'm not sure, but perhaps Dermstore online or Drugstore.com ships or you can find the line on Amazon. I know someone on Amazon must have it. Again, the use of the products such as an AHA is to keep your skin exfoliated in the long run. It's not just the AHA, but the pH that's really important to see results with progression. All AHA products are not at the correct pH.
This is why I love the Alpha Skincare line. I find theirs to be very gentle for my sensitive skin, but everyone is different. I cannot stress enough the importance of beginning slowly and using little product once a week and building up usage to suit your skin's needs as well as broad spectrum sunscreen. If a drop of oil isn't helping, you simply may need to consider changing foundations. It sounds like yours is just not working for you. I know for fact that the MUFE Face and Body is dry skin friendly...even severe dry skin applied with fingertips or a damp "Beauty Blender". If you do not have the funds,I would certainly save up for that MUFE formula. It is so amazing on even the most severe dry skin. Very forgiving. Viewing your skin needs as a whole and doing all these hydrating steps I find makes the biggest difference. Also, using cream products such as cream blush and highlighter help dry skin stay looking fresh and flake free. I personally would not be using powder on my face.

To address the flakes promptly, I think you can get Philosophy Microdelivery wash in London...a small is quite affordable. I'd use cool water rather than hot when washing my face as a whole. As for a Clairsonic, yes, it would be a good investment, but if you are on a budget right now, Philosophy Microdelivery and a cotton washcloth is hopefully within reach. I wouldn't spend my money on another less expensive product unless it shared true sonic technology. If you can't get Paula's Choice Recovery for Dry/Very Dry (my favorite), this toner would be my next choice. I know Paula has a European web page with samples that are very affordable. Some people love Thayers with Aloe, and it's a lovely toner, but I found removing witch hazel from my routine greatly improved my hydration so I suggest one low in witch hazel or free from it as well as alcohol.

Hopefully you have CeraVe and Aquaphor where you are. Luckily, Glycerin is available at any drustore, as is aloe and is not expensive. Just be sure the product is pure and alcohol free. MAC sells travel size Fix+ and Strobe Cream and that should make quite a difference right away, as would the Lait-Creme if you are not mineral oil sensitive or have breakouts. You can find it right hereon Beautylish.

Best of luck to you. Some great advice from the other ladies here.

You should check out Mario Badescu AHA and Ceramides lotion :) I've used it for awhile and I loved how smooth and moisturized it made my skin over time, because before I discovered it my skin was so dry haha. Its about $20 and you can find it online or at Ulta.

You are quite welcome. I enjoy some Mario products, but that A.H.A. product contains zero Alpha Hydroxy Acids. They are very misleading with that name and can work around it due to their labeling with periods after each letter, but there is not any AHA in the actual ingredients. You would see the word "acid" following an actual AHA. Crazy, right?

I agree that Ceramides are amazing, as the ladies stated, but there's lemon in the Mario. Citrus oils and other fragrant oils can sometimes irritate skin layers, even if the irritation is not noticeable on the surface. This leaves skin prone to free radical damage and actually breaks down collagen, actively aging skin and so I do my best to avoid fragrant oils or products that have fragrance (unless it falls way down on the ingredient list). I actually threw away my IT Cosmetics CC Cream because of all of the citrus oils in it, which in my view, are phototoxic. I spoke at length about it with my Derm and Estie and it's just not worth the risk to me. Broke my heart, but that MUFE..oh..like Heaven. I know our lovely Mod, Kitty, runs dry and loves it as well. Honestly, it is a life changer.

Ariana is right in that the Mario is hydrating, but it's the aloe in it that's providing that relief. With glycerin and aloe you could mix the two and save some cash since you can get a lot of product for your money. Mario's Aloe Toner is hydrating and I used to use it, but I like to look for anti-aging and healing products in my toners these days. If you get a Clairsonic, look for deals on the original Mia, which is priced much less at $99. I use the sensitive head about 2 or 3 times a week. Using a coupon and Ulta points I was able to purchase a Clairsonic Mia for about $75. The original comes with the sensitive head and it has one speed, which works perfectly with my own skin. I can understand if you want to save up for another model, but I just thought I'd mention how amazing the original is.

Thanks for being so responsive in your thread. It's wonderful to see members that are active. Hope you have a fantastic day.

On the Mario badescu note I know they have glycolic acid products that are good - like their glycolic foaming cleanser and that's what I use as an AHA and it works well for me - very gentle but still exfoliates

I second the alpha hydrox line AHA. I know people recommend starting low but I use the 14%. It's been amazing and super gentle on my skin. My skin feels like a baby's bum. I don't even have to use a moisturizer over it and there is zero irritation. I get a healthy glow when it's on but not bright red. Changed my skincare game!! And cerave products are fantastic and gentle on skin. I use the hydrating wash for my face and body and my skin has never looked better. Their nighttime moisturizer is great, as well as the spf for day which I recommend if you have dry, sensitive or irritated skin. Sun is never good for that stuff.

Susana, I used to have dry skin in those areas too and I hated it! It's nice to never have a flakey face. Be gentle when you exfoliate. A washcloth should be all you really need.

For dry skin use some kind of oil like olive or Argan. or try Ponds Dry Skin Cream.

Lol Rozberry youre breaking my heart. Are you sure there's no AHA in it? Magbe they just left out the acid part? Why would they say AHA but not put AHA in it?? Thats so weird!! And I didnt know lemon oil was bad for your skin. I've actually used it on my skin before to help acne but maybe that wasnt the best choice XD I still stand by the Mario Badescu AHA and Ceramides Lotion to be amazing though! :)

Aww...Ariana...lol

Well, it just got quite odd for me because the ingredients in the formula on Ulta are different from the ingredient on the website. That is strange. Even the description is different, one claiming it has Alpha Hydroxy Acid in it and the other does not, despite they are labeled the same on the bottle.

But even on the website formula, I'm stumped with their ingredient list.
Cast all that aside and you still have the inclusion of a lot of citus. It falls too high on the ingredient list for what I would personally choose or recommend knowing what my Derm wants me to steer clear of and what I have researched for my skin needs. It's a very personal thing and everyone doesn't share my own thoughts. I respect that. But when you have an AHA, the pH is key to how it will work and I don't' see anything about what the pH is.

I'm not an Estie or a Doctor, but I personally can't locate the AHA in the formula. The acid listed isn't an AHA so I would defer this to the expert on acids, Kitty. I'd certainly be interested in her view of the formulation. Paula's Choice has a review that used the same ingredient list I am familiar with. You can read their thoughts here.

The Alpha Hydrox has an amazing formula and the body lotion..Oh..so dreamy and at a pH that is highly effective. I just love the entire line and can't say enough about how great it is.
Danielle, how awesome to hear someone else that uses it and loves it!

Diana, maybe you can help with this formulation info. It's always great to learn something new here on Beautylish.

Coconut oil may help.

I think they are getting away with calling it an AHA because of the lemon - lemons have natural AHAs in them so I think that's why they are calling it an AHA without actually using a synthetic AHA ingredient instead they use a natural one... That would be my guess cause from that list I don't see any AHAs listed up front.

Also citric acid is considered an AHA so I think that's where it comes from.
