When do you use an essence/toner?

Hello girls!

I'm so sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm thinking of adding in a hydrating essence to my skincare regime. But...when would I use it? I also have a topical acne medication that my dermatologist prescribed (it's super gentle but very effective!) so would I use that after I use the essence or right after I cleanse? Cleanse --> Essence --> Acne medication --> Moisturize OR Cleanse --> Acne medication --> Essence --> Moisturize
