Toxins in Nail Polish...

Did you know that most nail polishes have up to 7 harmful toxins in them (DBP, toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, and xylene)? Some brands have only 2, and a few are free of toxins. I think it might be a good idea if we shared polishes we know are extremely harmful, those that are toxin-free, and those in between. Anybody aware of this problem and have anything to share?

I'm not really scared of toxins in nail polish and must admit that I don't really know how many there is in most of the brands I use!
But I do know that Zoya is free of everything - and on top of that it is one of my favorite polish brands! So if toxins is something you are very concerned about Zoya might be something to look into :)

Thank you, Sabrina. I know most of you young girls don't worry about toxins, but I do. I try to buy paraben-free skin care and cosmetics, and use only mineral sunscreen - zinc - as opposed to the toxic chemicals in sunscreen such as avobenzone and oxybenzone (there are many more). And most of the nail polishes are not cruelty-free! As we age (and start losing out memories & all- hahahahaha!) we start researching healthier choices in anti-aging. You'd be surprised at the research on some of these chemicals and what they can do after years of use. I am aware of Zoya and it is a good choice. It is 5 Free and cruelty-free.

I totally agree! Although I am a young person, I have researched in and out what makeup brand use as ingredients, and how they affect our bodies. Making the switch to ACTUALLY organic and natural/cruelty free has been challenging but very rewarding :)

Zoya is my favorite brand of nail polish. It wears really well on my natural nails. I too try to avoid substances that may be toxic. Better safe than sorry.

I use Julep nail products now. They're 5 free and my nails seem healthier while using them than when I'm not. I also find their formulas don't make me feel like I'm suffocating through my nails. (I know. I'm weird.)

Hi Chris, if you could please list some products that would be great. :) I wouldn't really go a lot out of my way to avoid toxins in nail polish but if I had the choice between two that I like anyway I'd always avoid the one with toxins, so it would be really helpful to get a bit of an idea about the topic, thank you :)

spot.com has a really good list of "Cruelty Free Brands", "The Grey Area", and "Don't Do It" brands to be aware of (I couldn't post the web address).

Thank you, that's very informative. I had a look at the nail polishes you listed and am happy to see that essie at least is one of the ones that aren't too bad. :) I will have to save the links for a later time when I've got a bit more time on my hands but I'll definitely have a proper look at them :)
