The best way to contour for beginners is to use a matte powder or a soft, blendable contour stick. Apply lines first and then buff.

Jacy I have the same issue...but with practice I have got better (soo much better that I now contour everytime and go out in public without the shame lol)
I started off with some bronzer, then I got good enough to deserve a contour palette...I used to '
'practice' everytime I would wipe and wash my make up off every night...that ways I would see how it looked with my full on make up- wrong, right... ;) you should start off with powders - not cream because cream contouring is a little harder to work through, I'm still using powder...personally I find it more natural looking too
Sometimes when my contour looks harsh, I just powder a bit on top and blend
Another thing I do is I apply my blusher a bit darker than usual with my contour, try this maybe?
