@Charlese, I have a container of 100% raw African shea butter and I love it!!! I use it on my lips when they get dry and I also rub it on stubborn acne scars that aren't fading away fast enough.

@Cameron, I guess some bars are better than others. There were a couple of African bar soaps that I saw which had added chemicals which would cancel out the natural healing properties that makes the soap so special in the first place. My (facial) skin is as dry as a desert cactus, and the reason I can handle the 100% raw natural soap twice a day is because I use a wonderful, amazing moisturizer from Burt's Bees. But no matter which form of the soap you use, all that matters is that you are seeing results :)

how often should you use it

I have the liquid kind. I have noticed that I haven't really broken out since I started using it and it got rid of the existing pimples. I've only been using it for about two weeks.

I completely agree! I just think that people in general need to pay attention to ingredients in any manufactured product they buy, as well as the order they are listed. If African Black Soap was listed maybe in the middle or the last, I wouldn't have even bothered. Or if there were other ingredients that legitimately were just cheap, filler products.

@Aubrie, if you have a really good heavy face moisturizer, you can use the soap twice a day. I've heard other people complaining that it dries out their face but they must not be using that good of a moisturizer lol, because my face stays baby soft even though I use the soap twice daily. If you need a good recommendation on a face moisturizer, go to page 2 of this discussion and you'll see a picture of the one I use.

But organic oils and purposeful ingredients being included in the bar wouldn't cancel out any healing properties that a heavy moisturizer wouldn't.

@Tina, awesome! That's good to know because I am not familiar with the liquid kind at all. So glad your breakouts have cleared up :)

@Cameron, yes it's crucial to pay attention. It's a shame that more people don't really know how to read ingredient labels.

I've been wanting to try this stuff for awhile. I currently use proactive and it seems to not be working for me anymore and its too expensive. Im going to order this and I'm excited to see how it turns out :) this was very helpful

@Aubrie yay!! Hope you get the results you're looking for with this product. I'm pretty sure you will. Let me know how it turns out.

Yeah I agree that organic oils wouldn't cancel out the natural properties. It's the other junk I saw listed on some of the bars that I was referring to.

ahh I've been hearing so much about ABS and this thread definitely convinced me to buy it! But here's my question..what do you recommend? The bar version or the one in the tub? Or are they the same things?

Jan 18, 2013

Melissa M.

Jess V, I recommend the one in the tub. It's 100% raw natural in it's purest form. I suppose there can be good versions of the bar depending on which one you buy, but the brown stuff in the round tub is the most authentic and will give you better results. But there is one drawback- it will dry your face out like crazy. BUT it will also clean your skin so deeply that all your impurities are being washed out. Just use a good heavy face moisturizer along with it. I naturally have dry skin and I am able to use my soap twice a day because I have a wonderful moisturizer. If you need a moisturizer recommendation, go to page 2 of this topic and you'll see a picture of the one I use.

I buy mine from Coastal Scents. You can purchase samples to see how you like it before committing to a large chunk of the soap. My skin is oily but this soap is definitely drying. Since I wash my face as soon as I get into the shower, when I rinse the ABS off after completing a cycle on my Clarisonic, I immediately slather on a couple squirts of Cetaphil all over my face and just leave it there while I shower and then rinse it off right before I exit the shower. The Cetaphil has a way of immediately adding moisture to my skin so after towel blotting my face, my skin is soft and smooth.

@Laura, that's an interesting looking bar of soap.

@Merve, it says liquid, but the picture shows otherwise plus reading some of the reviews on Amazon from that product leads me to believe it's really solid. I think they made a mistake by labeling it as liquid.
