It also depends on your skin type, (oily, dry, combo) is your skin acne prone? Do you cleanse daily? What do you use to apply your makeup?

I use the colorstay from revlon and I have a dry sensitive skin and no I don't have an acne prone skin. I use a beauty blender and a flat kabuki brush from sigma! @Teresa P.

It must be either the way you apply it or your skin because it looks cakey with both bb cream and foundation.

I don't feel like color stay is the best foundation for dry skin, I have dry skin as well. make sure you exfoliate about 2 a week, cleanse, tone, moisturize and serums every morning and night and a weekly hydrating mask. What is your skincare routine and products you are using? When applying foundation I suggest light layers and build it up if needed to have it not look so cakey, spray some fix plus on your beauty blender and maybe try applying without the brush. For foundations I'd suggest mac studio sculpt or smashbox studio skin for our skin type

Are you giving your moisturizer enough time to sink into your skin before you apply your makeup?

I second Sarah on that. Sounds like you just simply need to exfoliate along with following the steps she suggested.
