I've been thinking about getting my nails done but I'm not sure what kind to get : shellac, gel, acrylic.. maybe there are more but I'm not aware. I heard mixed reviews about all these, but I want one for its longevity and it won't damage my nails once I remove them. This will be my first time so I'm not sure what the procedures are. Any nail simple spring / summer nail ideas would also be appreciated! I go to school and work so I don't want it too be TOO dramatic. Thanks in advanced??

I would suggest gel, it's a little less damaging and looks the best in my opinion. Although I love me some acrylics.

Gel is good, get then done every three to four weeks which is good in the hairdressing world.

Liquid gels, you still get the length as you would with acrylics. After I switched from acrylics I'll never go back they damaged my nails and looked bad as they grew out. call ahead to make sure the salon offers liquid gels

Acrylic is my go-to. But it might not be good for your first time. Go for shellac. Then maybe later try acrylic. They do damage the nails a bit.

If you don't need to add length why not gel polish? I think this would be the least damaging, but I don't know much about this subject lol.

I'm all for acrylic and as long as you have them done by a pro, it should not damage your nails (mine are super healthy even after over a year of constant acrylic nails) and for longevity, well it depend on how fast does your nails grow... I have to get them done every 3 weeks because I have a big gap at the base of my nails, but the acrylic in itself is still good! my friend keeps them as long as 6 or 7 weekes.

My nails are at the length or almost the length I want them to be. What is shellac? Is it the same thing as gel? Thank you ladies for your responses.

The reason they are soo damaging, in my own opinion, is when you pull them off yourself. I've had both acrylics and gel and the reason I don't do it more often is because my nails are super oily and they don't stay and lift and they end up pulling off my nails then my nails peel. Also I don't live in a city and I'd have to drive two hours to replace broken or lost nails or for fills. But the one time I got them removed in the salon my nails where just fine, a bit thin but a good hardenig polish fixed that right away.
