How to curl hair with bobby pins...

IMO, it works much better if you don't lay them flat. I always get weird kinks when I do that.

Here's how I do it: I spray my (dry) hair lightly with water, and ONLY water. Then I roll them up and pin them to my head as if they were on rollers - except, obviously, there isn't a roller. I can arrange them in such a way that it looks like an updo, and I will wear my hair like that during the day. There are some scans floating around the internet from women's magazines circa 1912 that show you how to arrange them. Even leaving it in for 2-3 hours will give me a nice curl that lasts for a few days, but that's probably a result of my texture. My hair holds shape without too much torture.

The flat pincurls are simply not designed to work with long, thick hair. They're designed to work with vintage midi cuts, which don't go much past the shoulder. Pretty sure that's why I have the kinking problem.

I built off of this article http://frazzledfrau.tripod.com/titanic/recamier.htm
I don't do the rope around the puffs because that gives me a totally different curl, but this helped when I first started doing my hair that way.
