i never seem to find the perfect color for eyeshadow & i have a hard time "coloring in the lines" i guess. lol im new to the whole makeup thing. any tips for choosing the right color & applying it?

There's no such thing as the "right eyeshadow", wear whatever you like :) maybe start out with something that complements your eye or outfit color (sometimes matching the color exactly looks odd, so go for the complementary color based on the color wheel). As for how to apply it, depends on the look you want! I use my fingers if I'm doing something simple. For complicated looks I use brushes. ELF has some great affordable basic brushes if you're looking :)
