What Jenny has pictured is a gradient eye, not a smokey eye. A smokey eye is characterized as have the darkest color on the lid and fades as it goes up to the crease and beyond. A traditional smokey eye also doesn't include a line of eyeliner, winged or otherwise.

Wait Alexis, I always thought a smokey eye was just dark shadow that drifted beyond the crease, which is what is going on here.
Oh noes, I'm guilty of the dreaded gradient/smokey eye confusion!

Alexis is right but don't worry Jenny, I went through the same thing! Think of a smokey eye as smoke rising from the starting point of a fire into the air, it fades. Starts off black and fades into grey and then really light grey. I didn't explain it that great lol, I was trying to reword what Hannah said in her video!

It's okay Jenny, I didn't know there was a difference until I joined here! At least you know now! (:

Hi jenny, a smokey eye starts from lash line and fades as it goes up, and dosent includ a wing, or steaches out like a cat eye, if I remember right its always black on the lash line but don't quote me on that it can never be light and if it is light its no longer a smokey eye but a vertical gradient eye, if you really want to know in depth on what is a smokey eye and how to go about it I would ask jackie or alma these 2 ladies are real makeup artist and know all there is to know about makeup thats where i and a bunch of other ladies in here have gotten our information 😄

YouTube can also be a huge help too! Be sure you're looking at a Smokey eye tutorial instead of a gradient eye tutorial though, there's confusion there too!

Jenny I think that out of all the suggestions these ladies have said what was mentioned of it being like smoke as it raises up is much easier to picture after all those are almas exact words she uses to describe a smokey eye and you can't find those words in no text book and hannah got it from alma if u ask her she will say she got it from alma cuz she respects that explanation as much as we all do cuz its such a easy explanation to understand, as for you tube videos like the ladie mentioned you got to watch out for those as most of the time there gradient eyes or misinformation, if these beautiful ladies are throwing out almas explanation I say just go to the source and get it right and in depth 😄

Hannah Rants #3-Trends n Shit: http://youtu.be/HUeFv0CCWgc Here's a link to the video of Hannah's words that I was referring to. They could have come out of Almas mouth but they came out of Hannahs too and that's where I heard it from, not Alma, again, not saying that Alma never said it, I'm sure she did, but I heard it from Hannah. Thanks for the input though.

I'd like to say that I paraphrased Alma's explanation, she says the transition from fire to smoke but for me it works better to think of a burning building; you don't see the fire, only the black smoke around the building which dissipates as it rises. I watch too many action movies :)
