Manic panic should definitely work for what you're going for. I'd do a test on a small chunk first to figure out the amount of time to get the tint you want, but I had several friends who used it over dyed-black hair to get that subtle tint. Depending on how dark your hair is it may show up as a very deep blue or if it's closer to black it may just give it a blueish hint when the light hits it.
