Need help toning hair.

I'm trying to get my hair ash blonde.

I have naturally brown hair with enough highlights to appear blonde.

However, the toner makes the brown part orangey. (I tested a small section.) I also just highlighted my hair an hour ago.

I mixed the toner with vol 10 peroxide. Is this the problem? Or should I just try to avoid the natural hair?

I'm using Matrix 10v Color Sync

What? I'm surprised members haven't responded. I don't color my own hair or I'd help you out. Perhaps youtube will have some info. :/

Have you tried a purple shampoo? that tones a bit too and shouldn't affect your brown hair (too much)

I'm sure YouTube is very helpful for this, I'll be sure to check it out, thanks Rozberry :) And yup, Carien. I leave it in for around 3 minutes and then rinse it out, but it doesn't really change the color for some reason 😅

Hmm...I have ash blonde presently and they leave my toner in longer than that. Somewhere between 10 to 15 minutes..rinsing with cold water. Then Pravana or Fudge purple shampoo and I like "It's a 10" 5 minute miracle for blondes..plus they have a blonde leave in spray...as does Pureology.

I'll definitely try leaving it in for 10 to 15 minutes, I think that might help. I'm not sure what color the toner itself turns since it's in aluminum foil and I rinse it out right after, so next time, I'll be sure to check before rinsing. And mostly dry, but not bone-dry, should I let it dry fully first? Thanks so much for all the help!

I have 2 stylists (both are friends) and when one is touring, the other does my hair until she gets back. One tones wet...the other tones on mostly dry hair. I prefer toning wet, but if you aren't seeing results, it might be worth a shot toning dry. Also, I do foil highlights, but my toning is never done with foil..ever..so I'm not sure what the foil is about. I do know it should turn violet when you aim for ash or platinum because that's how my brass is toned.

Also..how did you chose which toner to use? Have you tried Wella's White Lady? I don't want to steer you wrong as I can only speak from what I have personally experienced. I would love to hear from a Hairdresser!

Oh..and I just want to be sure you are toning and not coloring your hair or doing highlights because that's a whole other product/technique. Toning takes place after you have lifted your color to blonde. Toning removes the brass. Just checking..lol

Hmmm...reading your first post again and seeing you already have highlights means you are toning 2 shades. I'm not sure how that works because my dual colors are color blocked and not highlighted. I know with certain toners, warm water opening the cuticle will cause bleeding of color and so cold water is used and my own color is never overlapped. I would hit Shaye up and ask her about this on her profile. She knows loads about color and is a doll.

That is sooo helpful, I'll try it both wet and dry. This time without the foil. Sorry, last question! Do you know if toner works without peroxide? I'm worrying the peroxide I'm using is too strong and messing with the brown. And the toner I'm using is Color Sync by Matrix, I'll try Wella's White Lady for sure. I'm not sure whether Color Sync is a toner or acts as one, so that's good to consider. And yeah, the two shades situation is the biggest dilemma, lol, I'll try rinsing with cold water, that should come in handy. And I'll totally do that, thank you!

Well, I worry that you are wrecking your hair with repeated tries. I know they use developer when mixing mine. White Lady is also known as Wella Color Charm T18. I know the box says 30 minutes, but that's way too long. Honestly though, I'd hit up a salon JUST to have them tone your hair. It isn't much money and you can watch the stylist and ask questions about product and procedure. If you don't have a salon, Yelp or Foursquare will help you find a few great ones. I'd phone them and ask how much is it to get toned. They'll look at your hair condition and can best know how to treat your highlights. I'm surprised we couldn't get a stylist 's input. I'm so sorry because I wish I could help more. I'd never want to steer you wrong or hurt your hair. Brass is ughhhh.

Totally, bleeding color is never a good look. Good idea, I'll get as much input as I can from professionals. I know I said it a billion times lol, but again, thank you so much. Your advice has been so helpful!
