I'll try to make this short, I've always worn makeup to pools/rivers ect to get wet. My face make up just doesn't come off much when I'm in water. Today I used a primer that one of my family members owns, and my make up was gone when I got it. I thought primer helped makeup stay on?

This is just my thoughts on it, it could be because the primer wasn't a decent one or was a different base then that of your foundation. If it just sits on top of your skin rather than absorbing/blending, then the foundation would just wash right off as soon as you got into the water. If the primer and foundation are of two different bases (silicone or water based) then they won't blend together. They seperate like oil and water, which would cause the top layer (foundation) to wash off in the pool :) This is just from what I know of primers and foundations, there could be another explanation I don't know of. Anyways, I hope I helped you some! Xx :)

Eye primers help to make foundations last longer.

Face primers, not so much. There are some that really do help but if you look at most the face primers they're full of silicones like the Smashbox one that was really popular.
The silicones in it are really only meant to make foundation go on more smooth, evenly blend easier and not blotchy or patchy like certain powder foundations.
They sit on top of the skin and give a smoother appearance since they prevent the makeup from seeping into pores as much.

They claim to creat a barrier between your skin and the makeup, that's the issue. It's not letting the makeup adhere to your skin in turn making it not last as long.

Then also consider that if its silicone based and if your makeup is water based its not going to even sit well since the water and oil won't mix causing it to slide around and can get cakey looking.

Also using a primer won't make your makeup waterproof.

@Jacqueline I think it would make silicone based foundation stick to the primer but it end up making it feel thicker.
I think the silicone stuff works better for dry to normal skin types.
Being oily, I used silicone based primer with a silicone based foundation and then since I'm oily it sorta mixed with it throughout the day and my makeup didn't look as oily but it definitely felt a lot heavier and if I accidently touched my face it would transfer so much and felt really greasy.

When I use silicone based foundation I use a primer that isn't as full of silicones and has more mattifying inredients I them, usually throes primers aren't clear like the smash box, MAC matte gel, NYX camera ready primer etc.
those ones were more clear and just felt horrible and made me transfer a lot.
The first couple of ingredients were silicone I believe.

^ okay so the silicone ones with like talc and aluminum starch + other more mattifying stuff work A LOT better then those that are clear/gel types that end up making me transfer more and feel heavy
