I'm in the process as well with changing my hair color, it's been blue black forever and I'm going to lighten it but not sure if I'll go blonde or red.

I love both. Maybe ask your stylist which color is harder to take out and start with the color that's easier to take out? I feel like it would be harder for you to go from dark brown to red, but easier the opposite way... I'm no hairstylist obviously just suggesting a different way to look at the situation! Hope someone gets the idea I feel like what I'm saying makes no sense, lol.
