So my current hair color is black and I was going to get my hair done red this December. I haven't dyed my hair for at least 6 months. I'd obviously have to bleach it. How damaging would the end result be? And also what's the average cost? I have thick hair that's about shoulder-length.

If its dyed jet black I would definitely look into a salon that uses Olaplex to really minimize the amount of damage. Going lighter than jet black is pretty damaging. I've dyed mine black last year and recently went to the salon to get my color changed and my stylist actually told me I was way better off just growing out the black and dying the top part brown instead. With any kind of drastic change like that I would expect to at least spend $100.

Kitty is right. I went blonde on some of my black before and the lift is brutal on hair. Red is also difficult to keep rich and fades quickly. I see multiple lifts to minimize breakage over a series of appointments...exceeding $100 due to several salon master colorist appointments, quality products, and tip. I'm not saying it can't be done, but to minimize damage, I'd take my time. She is rocking extensions, most likely. Gorgeous color.

Black box dye is notoriously difficult to get out of hair, and to get the vibrant red you want you'll have to bleach your hair to a very light blonde. most salons would treat black box dye and virgin roots (especially if there are colors previous to the box dye) as color correction because of the stripes of color. the cost would probably be around $200 an hour. I agree with Rozberry and Kitty, you might want to grow your hair out more, or if you really want a change, dye your hair a less drastic shade.

First of all do you have box dye? because it will be hard to get that color but its defently not difficult to accomplish. I totally agree with kitty k. find a place that uses olaplex it's an amazing product!! if it's going to be a permanent dye it will last forever lol but if you're going to constantly change the color go with a demi and that last about a month, depending how often you wash it. usually people will wash their hair with cold water so it dosent fade as much as it does with hot water. you could always do a glaze over your hair (ask me for the process )... honestly, if you want this color you can do it. it's just a bit of time consuming. I have my cosmetology license so if you need any tips or tricks just let me know (:

Cost? it depends where you go. if you go to a color tech. ( someone who specializes in just color) it will cost around $200-$300 because they will charge you for the time and/or how many bowls they use. also depends if you go to a high end salon or not? usually salons are based on levels and each stylist have different prices based on their work experience. you can always have a consultation and get a price point.

Definitively look into a salon hat uses Olaplex. It is basically a solution used to help lift color that would usually be very difficult to lift in one session. It will be less damaging. Also, dying red actually tends to be quite conditioning opposed to other colors. In the end everyone's hair is different and the condition of you hair now really is a factor also!

For me personally when I went from black to red I bleached my own hair from black to red in one sitting. You don't need to be platinum to achieve that colour, just any sort of orange tone will be fine. You'll need to find a bright red dye for it to look like that, I used to use fudge paint box dye in the brightest red shade they had and I would get that sort of colour however manic panic and directions have nice red colours too. If you haven't bleached your hair before and it's been 6 months since you last dyed it and you have experience with bleach you should really have any issues going this colour you'll just need to deep condition your hair afterwards and get a small trim. However, if you don't know bleach very well I wouldn't recommend playing with it but I know salons are expensive and that's why If I were still dying my hair I'd still be doing it myself, haha!

And just for reference, I did go to a hairdresser at one stage when I was like 14 to get black removed and I didn't feel like it was worth the 200$ to come out like 2 shades lighter. That's just me though, I've always had better luck dying my hair myself.

My hair is currently in a pretty healthy state. There's only this one 4 inch line of black that needs bleached out. Others than that my roots already have my natural red tinge to them.

Shaye makes a great point in that as a hyper light gal, I was thinking of my experience going black to blonde and doing it in sessions, but indeed, to lift enough to go that shade of red is much different. I'd still use a master colorist at a reputable salon though as I do not possess the skill or desire to play with my locks these days...lol Good luck!
