I went to Sephora the other day to buy new foundation and the sales rep / makeup artist was was trying to color match me to a foundation that was severely darker than my face only because it matches my neck and she was like you don't want to match your face to your chest because it will look off. I was trying to tell her that that was the look that I personally like my face naturally all around one color and really light the center of my chest which is typically exposed is really light. My neck is darker and because of the contrast between my face and my chest you can really see it like when I put foundation on. but I like that look I like my face to match my chest vs my neck. they wanted to know what do you ladies still do you match your face to your jaw, your face to your neck your face to your chest.

I match my foundation to my to chest/ neck. My face is lighter than my body so I use a foundation that's a little darker than my face but not by too much!!

And I went to Sephora one time & they gave me a CC cream in medium deep which was wayyyy too dark for me. You can't always trust them to match you correctly.

Personally I don't trust Sephora to color match correctly so you're definitely not the only one to get something that's the wrong color (the last color match I got was severely darker than both my face and my body). My face is only half a shade lighter than my body/neck so I just match to that so I'm consistently one color.

I typically match my foundation to either my chest or neck, though it does depend because my chest is lighter than my neck since it is 100% covered up and I am in the sun for about 8 hours a day.
If I match it to my neck I can just apply a tiny bit of foundation to my chest and it all flows, and if it's matched to my chest I can just apply a bit down my neck. It's really just preference for me and I prefer to match it to my neck.
When I apply foundation, I usually use different shades and I find that it adds dimension and looks way more natural as opposed to one flat color (Which is why I really favor my RCMA palette for this reason.) f she didn't really understand how you wanted your foundation matched, you could always ask for several samples and try them out yourself.

An awesome way that I learned was go to a professional Mac store and get color matched. Ask for a sample of it then take that to the store and match the colors!! This literally is so genious.

I match it to my face and chest as my neck is lighter, then I put bronzer on my neck!

The girls in Sephora are not necessarily makeup artists - they are retail sales people - with little to no experience regarding makeup artistry - they are just trying to sell you products - they don't necessarily do makeup on clients for a living they just sell the product - with that said anything they say is just to sell you some products - they are not necessarily knowledgable about what makeup is best for you - if you want to talk to a pro then do that - not a retail sales person making minimum wage at Sephora (and maybe some commission off the sales) - not trying to say they are not knowledgable at all - they are knowledgable about the products they sell but they are not make up artists or experts in that sense - they are the same people at target or Walmart just trying to sell the product in the store - that's it - we all have different skin types and pigmentation in different places - I personally tend to try and match my color to whatever shade my skin tone happens to be at the time - I tan easily in the summer and I'm very pale in the winter and need 2 different shades for different seasons - so just do what you think looks good on you - and seek an expert opinion if you want one - otherwise it's just makeup and you should wear it however you want to wear it :)

I've had the Sephora IQ machine used on me twice at two different Sephoras and the ladies did it differently both times and neither produced a match for the foundations I wanted to try but that's just my experience with it.
