Which ingredient is best to look for in a vitamin c serum,

Well, hydroquinone is a skin bleaching ingredient that is banned here in Europe and most of the world but is still available in the US, one of two countries that allow it. If I were you, I'd steer clear of this ingredient until there is more knowledge about it- it's been linked to the development of tumors and honestly I wouldn't take the chance personally.

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant and it helps your body to synthesize collagen in addition to brightening your complexion and fading hyperpigmentation. The problem with vitamin c is that it's unstable in nature- once sunlight or moisture hits it, it will oxidize so it needs to be formulated stable enough to maintain itself.

Ascorbic acid (or L-ascorbic acid) is the purest form of vitamin C, and if you find it in the ingredients, that's great. Another good ingredient to look for is tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which has been modified to be liposoluble (soluble in oil).
What you don't really want is ascorbal phosphate or ascorbal palmitate- they are less pure forms and your body will need to convert them into ascorbic acid before it can use it and you will get less of it. Plus, they're more expensive derivatives.
Some "skincare" brands will only put a drop of vitamin C in their products and call it "natural" or say it has high levels of vitamin C. Make sure it places high on the ingredient list to get more for your money.

Sorry this was so long, I did some research and I recently was listening to a podcast about it and that's how I learned this information. Please correct me if I'm giving wrong information- this is what I know.

Ascorbic Acid= Vitamin C
Hydroquinone=skin lightener that blocks "tyrosine" I believe that's hat it's called and it prevents melanin from being produced

Thank you both for your info!!:) do you recommend any good vitamin c serum? also when is it best to apply vitamin c? I been applying it after I wash my face then moisturizer then vitamin c but now from what breeze T has said I guess that's wrong?

C, then moisturizer, then zinc/titanium sunscreen. Retinol is good have have in your skincare arsenal - you could mix that with the C.

Serum should be applied after washing the face but before moisturizer. It's like a face cream, but with all the ingredients all concentrated without much filler.
I use one by the Italian brand Collistar but Ole Henriksen makes one called Truth Serum, but just check the ingredients first to make sure it fits the requirements above :) I'd say, go to Sephora or a department store, talk to the salesperson and then don't buy blindly, read the ingredients and base your final choice off of that. :)

I use Paula's Choice.. which is 15% vit C (doesn't sould like much but it is). I'm happy with the results and I've only been using it for 2.5 months. She also makes at 25% but its more for spot treatments rather than your whole face.

I've been using Ole Henriksen's Vitamin C serum for over a year and I love it. I cleanse, tone, then use Vitamin C serum, and last moisturizer with SPF. It takes a while for the dark spot to go away completely but they always do. Usually it takes about 3 weeks for me to barely see them. My night moisturizer has Vitamin C in it also but it also has rose oil. It's by KORRES.
