Microdermabrasion With Baking Soda?

My aunt went for her first of a series of microdermabrasion appointments, I just got off the phone with her, and I have some concerns.

My aunt told me that she was in a lot of pain and had to keep telling the esthetician to turn down the level(?) on the microdermabrasion machine. They started at a 10 and had to go all the way down to a 4 before my aunt was comfortable.

The thing that concerned me the most was that my aunt said the process involved baking soda. That was a red flag for me right there that this wasn't something my aunt should continue doing.

Is using baking soda a normal/okay thing to use for professional microdermabrasion? Is the pain my aunt felt normal?

I think she shouldn't go to her other appointments but I'm not a professional so I would really appreciate some guidance on the whole situation and explanation on what is/isn't normal and what should/shouldn't be used during microdermabrasion. Thank you!

She didn't really specify the type of pain, she just said she was in pain. I believe she said the baking soda was in the machine or something.

That's definitely not normal as far as I'm concerned. My aunt is a skin care specialist and she does micro dermabrasion on me to rid of my underdeveloped acne. Baking soda should never be used on the face if being exposed to water.

Thank you, Brittany and Melissa, I'll definitely tell her to not to get another treatment.

Whoa!! I don't know where the heck she went but the use of baking soda is alarming. And if the machine is set too high the skin runs the risk of being perforated by the crystals and cause scarring. No...she should not go back.

Thank you so much, Shelley! As soon as she said something about baking soda I knew something wasn't right. We just went to the same day spa last week for facials and those were perfect!

Yeah, she should look into a different place
Maybe try to find reviews on the place before you go??
I hope if she does go to another place she has better luck

Thank you, Qwaserght. We had gone there for facials the week before and they were great. I think the esthetician suggested microdermabrasion to my aunt but if I had known they used baking soda I would've made sure she didn't go.

Wow. Yeah...that's insanity. I would actually share the experience on foursquare or Yelp to help others prevent damaging their skin, let alone endure the pain. She clearly wasn't vetted properly by the spa, whose manager and owner should be contacted. Poor dear. I'm so terribly sorry. I've had Microderm done and it was quite relaxing as well as provided lovely results. She's entitled to a refund and a damn hug!

That kinda makes me wonder what other "malpractices" other places might use... That is kinda scary but if she knew they were using baking soda I would also hope that she would know enough about skincare that maybe it's not such a good idea - but also I think we should all be more aware of what salons and "professionals" are putting on our skin - cause you never know when something like this could be happening to us already but since we don't ask questions about the products being used then we are subject to something like this happening to us too.

Actually there is a process of microdermabrasion called dermaglide which includes the use of baking soda crystals. The medspa I work at doesn't use this form of microdermabrasion so I can't speak from experience with how well it works or if there's any reason it'd cause more pain than usual. Microdermabrasion shouldn't really hurt though. I would definitely tell your aunt to do more research and ask a lot of questions before getting something like that done.

Thanks for sharing that Satah. My Derms Medspa and local Estie does not offer either service. It definitely isn't something I'd consider, but it is great to learn something new.

No problem, I was very unsure about it when I first heard of this process & I honestly still kind of am. I've tried to do research on it but can't find a lot which is odd to me as well. I had low battery on my phone when I wrote my previous comment so I didn't get to say everything I wanted. I would still suggest not going back, the fact that it hurt so bad is quite alarming to me. I would definitely have her call the place she went to & ask questions on this process and if it is in fact what I think it is. I'd love to know because like I said I haven't found a ton of info on it when I've tried to research it. it's definitely scary!
