I like to French braid my hair into pig tails when its damp and sleep on it. If you sprit some of john freidas curl definer on the braids before you sleep, they will last all day long.

You can braid/fishtail your hair when it's wet and then sleep on it and let it dry. Also you can do a rope braid or get some bendy rollers if you want Heatless curls!

Also try a product called Surf's Up by Special Effects. Walmart sells it. Apply it into your hair before braiding. Its kinda like a pomade. It helps me since my hair is like dead straight.
